This contribution is devoted to the category of -MENTE adverbs in the Romance languages. The goal of this study is to discuss the role that these adverbs play in the method of learning new Romance languages called intercomprehension. Specifically, after having presented the main tenets of this didactic method, we describe the ways -MENTE adverbs are presented in four manuals based on intercomprehension. We then critically discuss some of the choices made in these manuals, by showing that the results gathered in a contrastive, corpus-based analysis of Italian, French and Spanish can improve the presentation of these adverbs. These results also improve our understanding of the forms that will be easily understood or, vice versa, create difficulties to the learner of one or more Romance languages, in particular in deciphering a written journalistic text. Finally, the output of our corpus-based analysis allows presenting a general, descriptive framework of the most important similarities and differences between -MENTE adverbs in Italian, French and Spanish. This framework is designed to facilitate the acquisition of receptive (reading) skills in several Romance languages at once.
