Abstract

Community ecology states that biodiversity, ecosystem functioning and ecosystem service provisioning of ecological systems are often closely related through a cause-effect relationship. The loss of biodiversity often implies loss of functions and services that cannot be recovered unless biodiversity recovers. Biodiversity supports ecosystem functions through a complementary effect between organisms or by the presence of highly functional or productive species. Restoration strategies of biodiversity, functions and services should take into account the enormous differences that these two components entail. Modern restoration studies should put greater emphasis on some concepts from community ecology and to studying the recovery of ecosystem services.
