The amplification of short-wavelength radiation is advantageously done across a laser-produced plasma medium. The main advantages of this scheme are the ultra-narrow linewidth (λ Δλ ⩾ 10, 000), the full temporal coherence, and the compact footprint that fits on a table-top. These figures-of-merit are complementary to those of short-wavelength beamtime-limited sources, which retain their interest for proof-of-principle research.
