Abstract

Text simplification is the process of reduc- ing the lexical and syntactic complexity of a text while attempting to preserve (most of) its information content. In this paper, we focus on syntactic simplification and present on-going work devoted to the ac- quisition of syntactic simplification rules for the French language. We show that data-driven, manual acquisition of sim- plification rules can be complemented by semi-automatic detection of syntactic con- structions that require simplification, and we provide the first manual of syntactic simplification rules for French.
