Lay summary
Surface relief submicro dot gratings (SMDG) are of considerable interest for opto-electronic applications as well as substrate materials for the covering with monodisperse colloidal spheres to implement order in colloid multilayers which can act as photonic crystals. The experiments to be carried out in the framework of this proposal should at least clarify the origin of the lateral force causing the material transport, which is still an unsolved question. The true molecular origin for the massive displacement of glassy material even far below polymer’s glass transition temperature has to be further investigated.Regular multilayers of functionalised colloidal spheres are strongly demanded as photonic crystals due to their unique properties dispersing visible light. Potential applications are functionalised wave guides or speed indicators with high precision of measuring. Various approaches are described in literature how one can organize colloidal particles to ordered layers of defined thickness or to single crystals. The aim we pursued was to build up three dimensional ordered structures using polystyrene (PS) particles with diameters 400…1000 nm. To facilitate an ordered deposition PS particles are deposited onto a substrate that is pre-structured.The proposed experiments will be realised within a framework of soft condensed matter research, which includes collaborations with both the PSI-SINQ scientific groups (e.g. USANS at MORPHEUS) as well as material science beam line at the Swiss Light Source. Moreover, beam time for surface diffraction at Hasylab/Hamburg (Germany) and BESSYII, Berlin(Germany) is available via long term proposals of the applicant. It is our belief that such a multi-disciplinary approach represents the most promising path toward a better understanding of polymer film surface profiling and 3D colloidal growth.A direct industrial application is not a primary target of the planned investigations although links to interested companies in the field of photonics is desirable. This will be checked after 2 years of project term.
