Gewalt und Aggression sind für Opfer, Täter und die Gesellschaft mit negativen Folgen verbunden. Es ist deshalb wichtig, deren Erscheinungsformen und Ursachen besser zu verstehen und auf dieser Grundlage bessere Präventionsstrategien zu entwickeln. z-proso untersucht dementsrechend die Entwicklung verschiedener Formen von Gewalt und Delinquenz im Lebenslauf sowie die damit verbundenen Risiko- und Schutzfaktoren.
Lay summary
Das Zürcher Projekt zur sozialen Entwicklung von Kindern und Jugendlichen (z-proso) erforscht Entwicklung,  Erscheinungsformen und Ursachen aggressiven und delinquenten Verhaltens von der Kindheit bis ins Erwachsenenalter. Dabei wird auch die langfristige Wirksamkeit der Frühpräventionsprogramme Triple P und PFADe evaluiert. Den Kern der Studie bilden rund 1400 Kindern, die 2004 in der Stadt Zürich eingeschult wurden. Mit  60% der Eltern, die ausserhalb der Schweiz geboren wurden, zeichnet sich diese Stichprobe durch eine grosse kulturelle Vielfalt aus. Die Kinder und ihre Lehrpersonen wurden von der 1. bis 11. Klasse bisher 7-mal befragt, die Eltern – jeweils in ihrer Muttersprache – bis zur 5. Klasse 4-mal. 84% der Teilnehmenden der ersten Befragung sind nach wie vor an der Studie beteiligt. 2018 ist eine Erhebung im Alter von 20 geplant. Das Projekt ist an den Universitäten Zürich und Cambridge angesiedelt. Nebst dem Kernteam ist eine Vielzahl weiterer Forschender im Rahmen internationaler Projektpartnerschaften und Dissertationsprojekten am Projekt beteiligt. Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext z-proso ist weltweit eines von wenigen langfristig und gross angelegten Forschungsprojekten zur Entwicklung von Gewalt und Problemverhalten. Der Einbezug der sprachlicher Minderheiten zeichnet das Projekt zusätzlich aus und verleiht ihm angesichts der Herausforderungen, die sich urbanen Zentren in Zusammenhang mit verstärkter Migration stellen, eine besondere gesellschaftliche Bedeutung. Mit der Fortsetzung des Projekts können Jugendliche aus einer Vielzahl kultureller und sozioökonomischer Kontexte von der Kindheit bis ins frühe Erwachsenenalter untersucht werden. Daraus lassen sich wichtige Erkenntnisse zu psychosozialen Problemlagen und Verhaltensschwierigkeiten und ihren Ursachen im Lebenslauf gewinnen.

The Zurich Project on the Social Development from Childhood to Adulthood (z-proso) is a longitudinal study of a cohort of 1’675 that entered one of 56 public primary schools in Zurich, Switzerland, in 2004. The study mainly aims to better understand the processes that influence multiple domains of well-being and poor social functioning. It has a particular emphasis on aggression and violence, but also comprises developmental data on prosocial behavior, internalizing problems, ADHD, non-aggressive conduct problems, substance use and delinquency. The large and ethnically mixed sample, the dense sequence of assessments with multiple-informant data, the high retention rate, and the combination of measurement domains make z-proso an important resource for innovative research nationally and internationally. z-proso currently entails seven main waves of data collection at ages 7, 8, 9, 11, 13, 15, and 17. In addition to multi-informant measures of the various behavior domains, the study comprises information on relevant putative causal mechanisms and risk-factors at the individual level (e.g. self-control, cognition and decision-making, daily routines), the family level (e.g. parental monitoring, corporal punishment, sibling violence), the peer level (e.g. best friends’ delinquency), the school level (e.g. relationship with teacher) and the neighbourhood level (e.g. ethnic heterogeneity). In the initial phase the project also included a cluster-randomized universal intervention component. This proposal outlines plans for z-proso to become a national research infrastructure for the 2017-2020 period. It describes the background and current academic achievements of the study, the planned organization as a national research network, the upcoming data collections, data documentation and public access, data protection and ethics procedure, as well as potential prospective research priorities. Over the past five years z-proso has been increasingly successful. The investment into a long-term cohort study has enabled us to conduct innovative research with findings that have contributed to our understanding of developmental dynamics from childhood to adolescence. Already, a growing international and interdisciplinary network of z-proso researchers finds z-proso a valuable resource for answering important research questions. For the upcoming period we plan to extend the data collection into early adulthood, to add official records as a major source of information, and to foster an even broader collaboration of Swiss and international researchers interested in human development. The national research infrastructure z-proso would be institutionally affiliated with the Jacobs Center for Productive Youth Development at the University of Zurich. The Jacobs Center is a world-leading interdisciplinary research institution devoted to studying the crucial transitions from childhood to adolescence and adulthood. It provides an ideal environment for z-proso as a showcase of high-quality social research in Switzerland.
