Inhalt und Ziel des Forschungsprojekts

Das übergeordnete Ziel des Projektes „Sustainable waste and resource management to support the energy turnaround (wastEturn)” ist es, den Beitrag des Schweizer Abfallmanagementsystems für die Energiewende zu optimieren.

Insgesamt trägt das Projekt zur Energiewende bei durch (i) die Ermittlung und Bewertung möglicher Maßnahmen zur Erhöhung der Ökoeffizienz für die energierelevanten Abfallströme, (ii) die Analyse von Investitionen und die finanzielle Tragfähigkeit und Wertschöpfung eines für die Umwelt optimalen Abfallmanagementsystems auf nationaler und regionaler Ebene, (iii) die Analyse von Treiber und Barrieren der Umstellung auf optimale Abfallmanagementsysteme und die Erleichterung der praktischen Umsetzung durch die Integration von Wissen und Ansichten der Akteure der schweizerischen Abfallwirtschaft, (iv) die Unterstützung der Umsetzung und den Betrieb von komplexen WtE Systemen, und (v) die Wissensförderung bei Wissenschaft, Industrie und Politik in Richtung ressourceneffizienter Systeme und nachhaltiger Entwicklung.

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext des Forschungsprojekts

Ein Beirat, bestehend aus Mitgliedern aus Industrie, Gemeinden und Politik, wird das Projekt unterstützen. Regelmäßige Treffen mit dem Beirat für die Datenbereitstellung und für den erfolgreichen Transfer der Ergebnisse in die Praxis werden organisiert.

Abstract

The overarching aim of the joint project titled Sustainable waste and resource management to support the energy turnaround (wastEturn) is to optimise the contribution of the Swiss waste management system to the Energy Turnaround. It comprises four subprojects (SP1-SP4) covering the assessment and optimisation of the energetic and resource recovery potential of municipal solid waste (MSW) as well as of industrial waste-to-energy (WtE). For the latter, the energy intensive chemical and pharmaceutical industry and the steel and cement industries are considered within the subprojects. A comprehensive environmental and economic assessment of the studied systems is carried out, while the transition towards sustainable waste and resource management is analysed and facilitated from a social and practical perspective. In this way, all three pillars of sustainability are considered. Overall, the project contributes to the Energy Turnaround by (i) identifying and assessing potential measures for increased eco-efficiency for the most energy-relevant waste streams and the related industries in the Swiss waste management system, (ii) analysing the need for investments and the financial viability and value creation of an environmentally optimal waste management system on both a national and sectorial level, (iii) analysing drivers and barriers of the transition to optimal waste management systems, and facilitating their practical implementation by integrating knowledge and views of the actors of Swiss waste management (iv) supporting implementation and operation of complex WtE systems through the formulation of schemes and mathematical models to support strategies to deal with planning/scheduling problems under uncertainty, and (v) fostering capacity building among academia, industry and policy-makers in the direction of resource efficient systems and sustainable development. All subprojects are closely interlinked by information and methodology transfer along the whole project duration. Even more, the subprojects will work on common case studies encompassing various waste flows.The umbrella project will ensure a joint definition of the research goals, smooth information flow between the subprojects, and timely achievement of milestones. This will be accomplished by setting-up comprehensive work plans in collaboration with the project partners and monitoring its implementation as well as coordinating all necessary reporting activities An advisory board, consisting of members from industry, municipalities and policy makers, will support the project. Regular meetings with the advisory board will be organised by the umbrella project. This advisory board will hold a crucial role for data provision and particularly for the successful transfer of the results into practice.
