Côte d’Ivoire and the pacific coast of Colombia have in common a rich biodiversity but also a high concentration of Afrodescendant population, social inequality, armed conflict and extreme poverty. Additionally, in both regions, the hospital’s wastewater represents a major cause of water pollution. The wastewater of hospitals in these regions are directly discharged, without any treatment, in natural waters or simply poured in wells drilled, where the pollutants are leaked, sending dangerous chemicals to the surface or, on occasion, seeping into shallow aquifers that, in combination with lagoons and rivers, store the region's drinking water. Water is a key element for these communities and the contamination of both groundwater and surface water represent a serious risk not only for the health of the population but also for their rich biodiversity and the economical development of the most important economical sectors such as agriculture, fishing and tourism. Thus, the main goal of this project is to treat the hospital wastewaters by an innovative and alternative methods based on advanced oxidation processes (AOP’s). For that purpose, the techniques that will be investigated are Fenton, photo-Fenton, the ultrasound and the electro-oxidation (electrochemical techniques). They will be used to produce reactive oxidants such as the hydroxyl radicals which are extremely reactive and non selective. That method will take advantage to be environmental friendly. To perform such methods, influence of various parameters dealing with the preparation of stable electrodes, with the degradation of the hospital wastewaters using the AOPs (UV/H2O2, Fenton, photo-Fenton, ultrasound, electrochemical) will be determined and followed. Focus will be made on the optimization of degradation yield of the pollutants of the hospital wastewaters and also on the investigation about the mechanism of the organic pollutants oxidation during the hospital wastewater treatment. The project proposes a trilateral co-operation: Switzerland-Côte d’Ivoire-Colombia (North-South-South cooperation), as a strategic approach to deal with this meaningful global issue. Four PHD students (one from EPFL, one from Colombia and two from Côte d'Ivoire) will be involved in this project. In Côte d’Ivoire, the wastewaters of the university hospital center of Treichville will be concerned by the study. In Colombia, investigations will be carried out at the Divino Niño hospital center of Tumaco. The whole coordination will be realized by the Swiss partner in close cooperation with the partner of group 1 from Côte d’Ivoire and the project will be shared in various tasks which will be assigned to each group. Progress of the work according to the tasks will be followed by the responsible and yearly meeting will be organized. Based on the study, a prototype will be built for the demonstration of an AOP water treatment unit. End-users will be formed in the use of this prototype and it could be a job source for users. Through scientific publications, newspapers, web, congress, conferences, the results of the project will be disseminated. The results of the project are expected to impact positively on people according to the model based on the theory of change. Thus, change in the improvement of the Analytical capabilities of the southern laboratories involved in the project (groups of University Felix Houphouët Boigny of Cocody and University of Antioquia) is expected to occur. Stakeholders composed of technicians of the hospitals, citizens, scientific community, authorities of the countries will be deeply involved in the project. Additionally, one to three training periods in different field of expertise will be proposed to each PhD student so that each trainer could benefit of the interdisciplinary environment and gain a better understanding of the global objectives of the project. That project will reinforce the trilateral North-South-South cooperation between the three partners.
