This is an interdisciplinary project, situated between Early Modern English literature, visual culture, and Reformation discourse. Deploying a rigorously historicist approach, it will read the highly visual biblical poetry of John Milton (1608-1674) in the context of the Caroline image debate of 1641-2 and its concomitant iconoclasm.
