Lay summary
New developments in telecommunications enable new means of co-operation within and between organisations. To what extent today's traffic volume could be reduced by the use of video phones, video conferencing, teleshopping, etc., and whether this in turn would trigger off decentralised activities from companies, thus creating more goods traffic, remains in question. Key Questions: How frequently, for what purposes, and why are new communications media used within and between organisations? In what way do these new communications media contribute to the replacement of business travel and to the rationalisation of goods traffic? Do new communications media create new traffic, and how could this be minimised? How can the overall impact on traffic and the environment be evaluated, and what measures are available for improvements? The research team conducts written and oral interviews with the aim of rationalising possible scenarios. EVITA (EValuation of the Impact of cybertechnologies on TrAnsport and environment) collaborates closely with Project A8 in preparing a common synthesis.
