Fresh Winds. Vermittlung aktueller Forschung zu BlasinstrumentenKann eine Orgel mittels dynamischem Anschlag weiterentwickelt, eine Kontrabassklarinette durch Elektronik perfektioniert oder der Nachbau einer historischen Trompete dank historischer Fertigungstechnik verbessert werden? Derartige Fragen hat sich die angewandte Forschung der Hochschule der Künste Bern (HKB) in bisher 14 Forschungsprojekten zu Blasinstrumenten gestellt. Das Vermittlungsprojekt "Fresh Winds" präsentiert nun der Öffentlichkeit deren Fragestellungen, Vorgehen und Resultate.

Inhalt und Ziel des Projekts Dies geschieht auf drei Ebenen: Online: Eine partizipative Webseite informiert über die Forschungen u.a. mittels Filmmaterial und lädt in Blogs und Foren zu weiteren Fragen und zur Mitwirkung ein. SpezialistInnen beantworten Fragen zu Instrumenten und deren Kontext. Eine Ausstellung zeigt, wie diese Forschungen und technischen Entwicklungen an Blasinstrumenten erfolgten. Eine Reihe von Prototypen und Nachbauten historischer Instrumente können durch das Publikum angespielt werden. Die Ausstellung wird an sechs Orten in allen Sprachregionen der Schweiz gezeigt. "Meet an expert": Workshops vertiefen dies in Vorträgen der Forschenden und in Diskussionen mit den beteiligten MusikerInnen. Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext Angewandte Forschung führt zu neuen Fragestellungen. In multidisziplinärer Zusammenarbeit mit Instrumentenbauern und Naturwissenschaftlern (ETH, Empa, PSI) hat sich die HKB seit ihrer Gründung 2003 als führende Forschungsstätte zu Blasinstrumenten etabliert. Die Resultate kommen Orchestern und MusikerInnen der historischen Aufführungspraxis ebenso zugute wie den Instrumentenbaufirmen – und mit "Fresh Winds" nun auch der Öffentlichkeit.

Wind instruments are the focus of "Fresh Winds", which aims to communicate to a broad public the content of a series of research projects on wind instruments (including the organ) conducted at the Bern University of the Arts (HKB). This research covers a wide spectrum of topics, ranging from innovation in organ-building to investigations of historical brass instruments, enabling instrument-makers to build modern copies, and the development of a contrabass clarinet using electronically controlled keypads. "Fresh winds" thus naturally addresses wind players both professional and amateur, though it is also intended to engage with general music lovers. There are three aspects to this project:• A participative web platform. This will contain information on the research projects, but will in particular offer forums and blogs to offer visitors to the platform the opportunity to ask questions and to upload pictures of instruments and other sources. This, in return, will enable the HKB’s researchers to access new sources.• A travelling exhibition that will be shown in at least six venues in Switzerland from September 2019 onwards. It will display prototypes from the projects, historical instruments and films ("visual storytelling") to demonstrate the procedures and results of the research projects. It will be possible for the public to play some of the instruments.• "Meet an expert" workshops. Here, specific interest groups will be offered a more thorough introduction to aspects of the research and will be given the opportunity to engage in discussions. This in turn will provide practical feedback for research being run by the researchers of the HKB.With its innovative approach in applied research and the hitherto results of its research projects, the Research Field "Musical Instruments" (part of the Research Area "Interpretation" at the HKB) has succeeded in making a name for itself in the community, among musicologists, organologists, practical musicians and instrument builders. From 2003 to 2018, it has carried out a total of fourteen projects on wind instruments, each of them featuring a different scholarly orientation, a different scope and different instruments. Seven of these projects were funded by the SNSF, three by the Commission for Technology and Innovation CTI, three by the Bern University of Applied Sciences BFH and one by the Bundesamt für Berufsbildung und Technologie (BBT, today SBFI). Each of them encompassed forms of collaboration with partners from different fields: from the natural sciences, technology, instrument-building, music performance, publishing companies and/or museums; these partners included ETH Zurich, Empa, the Paul Scherrer Institute, the Swiss National Museum, and Egger Instrumentenbau Basel.
