Anthropogene Emissionen von Kohlendioxid (CO2) und anderen Treibhausgasen stören das Klimasystem mit weitreichenden Konsequenzen für Natur und Gesellschaft. Das wissenschaftliche Verständnis dieser komplexen Veränderungen zu verbessern ist ein vorrangiges Forschungsziel. Modelle des Erdsystems simulieren Klimaänderungen und die Flüsse von Kohlenstoff und von weiteren biogeochemischen Elementen zwischen Atmosphäre, Land, Ozean und Ozeansedimente. Diese Modelle erlauben Quellen und Senken der wichtigen Treibhausgase CO2, Methan (CH4) and Lachgas (N2O) zu quantifizieren, Prozesse und Rückkoppelungen zwischen Klima und biogeochemischen Kreisläufen zu studieren und Hypothesen zu testen.

Unsere Forschungsstrategie zielt auf ein quantitatives Verständnis des Erdsystems durch die Kombination von Beobachtungsdaten und Modellen.  Mit dem Bern3D-LPX Modell erstellen wir transiente Klimasimulationen über glaziale-interglaziale Zyklen und die nächsten tausend Jahre für eine Palette von Treibhausgasen und Isotopen. Bern3D-LPX Modelensembles werden in Kombination mit Beobachtungsdaten für wahrscheinlichkeitsbasierte Szenarienrechnungen eingesetzt. Ein Fokus ist auf den Treibhausgasen CO2, CH4 und N2O und deren marinen und terrestrischen Quellen und Senken. Ein umfassender Satz von Variablen wird modelliert und mit Proxydaten und instrumentellen Daten verglichen. Von Interesse sind zum Beispiel, marine Parameter wie Kohlenstoffisotope, die Tiefe der Lysokline, pH, biologische Produktivität, und Flüsse an Opal, Kalzit, und organischen Partikeln. An Land sind Änderungen in der Fläche von Feuchtgebieten, Mooren und Permafrostgebieten und deren Quellen an Treibhausgasen von Relevanz.

Ein Projektschwerpunkt fokussiert auf die anthropogene Störung des Erdsystems und Pfade zur Dekarbonisierung der Wirtschaft. Emissionen aus Landnutzung, Treibhausgas-Klima Rückkoppelungen und der Zusammenhang zwischen CO2 Emissionen und Umweltparametern werden quantifiziert. Änderungen des stabilen Kohlenstoffisotops 13C werden mit dem Community Earth System Model für die industrielle Periode und dieses Jahrhundert untersucht.

Das Projekt führt zu einer besseren Quantifizierung des Zusammenhangs  zwischen anthropogenen Emissionen und den Klimazielen der Klimarahmenkonvention der Vereinigten Nationen und des Klimaabkommens von Paris. Das Projekt wird neuartige Beiträge zu internationalen Anstrengungen, wie dem „Coupled Model Intercomparison Project“ und dem „Global Carbon  Project“, liefern und eine einzigartige, integrierte Analyse von Änderungen im Erdsystem der letzten Million Jahre und des Anthropozäns bereitstellen.

Abstract

The aim of this project is to integrate information from paleo proxy data and the instrumental record into Earth system models to advance the quantitative and qualitative understanding of biogeochemical-climate feedbacks and to improve Earth system projections. The project will lead to a better quantification of the link between anthropogenic emissions and climate targets, related to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Paris Agreement.We will continue to apply the Bern3D-LPX, a cost-efficient Earth System Model of Intermediate Complexity, and the physically-comprehensive Community Earth System Model (CESM). With Bern3D-LPX, we will perform (i) glacial-interglacial, multi-greenhouse gas, multi-tracer, multi-isotope simulations, (ii) seamless simulations from glacial periods to the next millennium, and (iii) Bayesian, observation-constrained process quantifications and projections using massive model ensembles. A focus is on the greenhouse gases (GHG) carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O) and their land and ocean sources and sinks. A comprehensive set of parameters will be jointly simulated and compared with proxy and instrumental data. These include, for example, GHGs and atmospheric oxygen as well as proxy-relevant ocean and sediment parameters such as isotopes of carbon and other elements, oxygen, N2O, lysocline depth, carbonate ion, pH, biological productivity, nutrient utilization, and opal, carbonate and organic particle fluxes. On land, changes in wetland, peatland, and permafrost extent and their GHG sources and sinks are of particular interest. Potential Earth system impacts of the late Pleistocene Megafauna Extinction will be explored. Addressing the modern era and decarbonization pathways, we will perform Bayesian projections to quantify land use emissions, GHG-climate feedbacks and the link between CO2 emissions and impact-relevant variables. This will inform emission mitigation efforts. Carbon isotope-enabled simulations with CESM will be run over the industrial period and the 21st century. Their analysis will advance the understanding of the redistribution of anthropogenic carbon and carbon isotopes in the Earth System. This project will provide novel input to international modelling efforts such as CMIP6 and the Global Carbon Project and a unique, integrated analysis of Earth system change of the past 1.5 million years and the Anthropocene.
