Lay Summary (German)

Lead

Abstract

Influence of Farming on Biodiversity and Climate Change: Participatory Research on Farms (PubliFarm)Promoting the involvement of lay people in the complex issue of food production, biodiversity and climate changeThe project PubliFarm aims to communicate topical research results on the influence of agriculture on biodiversity and climate change to a broad public in a participatory and interactive approach. Both scientific and applied agricultural aspects are popularised by way of a participatory learning experience. Lay people are involved via low-threshold interactive expositions at public events as well as through participatory research on the occasion of local events on farms (e.g. Forscher-Tage).GoalsThe main goals of these activities are (1) to raise public awareness of agricultural methods and their influence on biodiversity and climate change. (2) Furthermore, the project seeks to render research results on soil, plant and animal sciences that have a bearing on everybody’s daily life accessible to lay people. This is achieved by giving them an insight not only into the findings but also into the research approaches and methods as well as into possible consequences for future agriculture as regards its contribution to food security. (3) Finally, the activities are supposed to enable lay people to critically reflect on their consumption behaviour.General ContextClimate change and the observable reduction of biodiversity are generally agreed to be important challenges of the 21st century. However, public awareness and knowledge of the interrelations between modern farming and these two topics are quite scant. Many people have no direct connections with agriculture anymore - only about 2% of the Swiss population work in the sector - and hold some rather romantic views about it. Moreover, the broad public does not acknowledge the importance of soil in delivering ecosystem services (e.g. food production, biodiversity), although, at the same time, research on agriculture, biodiversity and climate change is conducted at a top level in Switzerland. Project partners and existing initiativesImportant actors in agricultural, veterinary and soil research in Switzerland (e.g. ETH Zurich, NRP 68, University of Bern) cooperate in the project and will make sure that the research findings are correctly popularised by the education and communication experts involved (School of Education PH FHNW and Sinnform AG). One important step in the outreach process has already been taken within the context of the LERNfeld project of GLOBE Switzerland, to which some members of the project team contributed by developing comprehensive subject-related online teaching materials for schools. In the present project, the most suitable topics (e.g. soil animals; plant diversity; cow & climate) will be further popularised in order to reach a broader audience at public events and so-called Forscher-Tage on farms. Interactions with the public and participatory research on farms will be facilitated with the support of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft zur Förderung des Futterbaus (AGFF), the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and of the Swiss extension service Agridea.
