Lay Summary (German)

Lead

Abstract

This communication project aims to discuss and debate social science research with a broad public. It is based on the PhD thesis that has been recently completed by the main applicant of this project, Dr. des. Lucia Lanfranconi: “Gender equality through economic benefit discourse? A qualitative analysis of (in-)equality generating mechanisms in the implementation of the Swiss equality law from a discursive and gender sensitive perspective”. This PhD project was financed by the SNSF within the ProDoc “Gender: Prescripts and Transcripts” (PDAMP1_127019). The doctoral thesis reveals how gender inequalities are reproduced partly unintentionally through interactions between the current Swiss gender equality policy, equality projects and employers as well as employees. This topic is of interest to a broad public as most people spend a lot of time at work - as an employee, an employer or both. Work and working conditions shape men and women’s identities. Gender inequalities in the workplace have repercussions on inequalities in family life and retirement. With this communication project, we aim to discuss mechanisms of - partly unintendedly - (re)production of gender inequality with the general public. Additionally, we will try to inspire different target audiences to develop new, creative solutions to these problems. Accordingly, we hope to influence actors on different levels (e.g. equality policy, equality projects, firms, individual women and men) towards more gender equality in their daily life. As the analysis of social inequalities is at the core of social science, this project further aims to give an insight into a typical social science research project as well as to strengthen the understanding of the social importance of such research. Our main target audience is the general public. In specific project steps however, we will communicate with specific target groups such as gender equality policy practitioners, (future) employers/employees and (potential) students of social science. To ensure a sustainable dialogue between the public and the researcher the communication strategy consists mainly of the following strongly connected communication tools:(1)A documentary film (30 minutes) and a trailer (1 minute) will be produced by the documentary filmmaker Romana Lanfranconi and her voltafilm GmbH. The film will consist of three parts: a) short introduc-tion of the history of gender equality in Switzerland in an animation, b) six portraits: two gender equality policy practitioners, two employers, two employees and c) a frame story of a social science researcher conducting re-search. Contrasting the different positions in the portraits, the film will reveal mechanisms reproducing gender inequalities. In addition, it will show what a social science project may look like and what results such a project can generate.(2)An interactive website will be developed, coordinated by outreach gmbh, an institution specialized in the dialogue between academia and the wider social world. Each target group will find on this website: a) specif-ic sequences of the film, which show different mechanisms of the (re)production of gender inequality (prob-lems); b) background information to these specific issues/problems; c) complementary materials with ques-tions/stimulation for an interactive and goal-oriented discussion; d) space for output of the discussions, e.g. developed solutions for the problems; and e) a blog commenting on this output. The visible output on the website will provide a basis for an ongoing debate as well as the qualitative evaluation of the project.(3)Interactive and goal-oriented workshops/events - based on the film and the complementary material - will be offered and adapted to the interest of specific audiences. In the workshops, the participants will find themselves in an active role, discussing and generating creative solutions regarding gender equality (output). We will organize at least eleven professionally moderated workshops in various French and German speaking Swiss cities (e.g. in art-houses cinemas, roadshow). Outreach gmbh will coordinate and guarantee a sustainable imple-mentation, including implementing our workshop into additional ongoing events and professional training cours-es organized by the project partners.Mass media communication and promotional measures are another important part of our communication strategy. We will raise the issue and encourage the debate with screenings, film talks, articles and interviews in different mass media (social media networks, cinemas, film festivals, newspapers, magazines, radio, television).
