Lead
La formation des chaînes de montagnes affecte des masses bien plus importantes que celles que nous voyons en surface: c’est toute la lithosphère sous et autour d’un orogène qui supporte les sommets. Des forces extraordinaires agissent sur ces masses qui se déplacent les unes par rapport aux autres lors des séismes, parfois violents. Ces chocs sont la manière la plus efficace pour accommoder la déformation dans un système de collision, mais l’architecture 3D et les mécanismes physiques associés ne sont pas tous bien connus. C’est la structure et les processus liés à l’orogenèse qui doivent être mieux appréhendés par l’imagerie géophysique 3D, par la modélisation numérique, et en contraignant les parties les moins connues du système. Ceci est une approche fondamentale pour mieux comprendre la collision des continents ainsi que l’aléa sismique qui est parmi les plus importants dans et autour des chaînes de montagnes, mettant en risque des dizaines de millions de personnes.

Contenu et objectifs du travail de recherche

Les chaînes de montagnes comme les Alpes et l’Himalaya résultent de la collision entre deux plaques tectoniques. Ce sont des régions complexes dans leurs structures et en termes de processus en jeu, à la fois physiques, comme la déformation de la lithosphère, et pétrologiques, comme les réactions métamorphiques. Les objectifs principaux de ce projet sont l’imagerie des structures à différentes échelles par des outils géophysiques (sismologie, gravimétrie) et la compréhension de leur évolution en 3D. Plus particulièrement: (1) l’étude de la croûte continentale inférieure, sa structure, sa fabrique anisotrope, son comportement en déformation, l’absence ou la présence des séismes, et son rôle dans la formation des chaînes de montagne, et (2) l’étude des réactions transformant des roches à grande échelle, comme la vitesse de réaction et les processus physiques associés au changement de volume lors de ces réactions. Ces nouveaux résultats contribueront à la construction des modèles numériques physiques en 3D simulant la structure et l’évolution géodynamique des chaînes de montagnes.

Contexte scientifique et sociétal du projet de recherche

Ce projet apportera des données et des modèles qui contribueront à une meilleure compréhension des structures et des processus d’orogénèse, et ce en 3D et à haute résolution. Le projet comporte plusieurs études au cœur des Alpes et de l’Himalaya. Dans les deux régions l’apport des données structurales permettant une meilleure simulation de l’aléa sismique est visé. En Suisse ces données amélioreront les interprétations sismotectoniques. L’origine des plus grands séismes dans les Alpes sera clarifiée. Les nombreux points d’incertitudes concernant le Plateau de Shillong (Inde) et l’Est de l’Himalaya seront analysés et contraints.

Abstract
The project aims to investigate the origin of the slab beneath the Eastern Alps (European? Adriatic?), to perform tomographic calculations, the characterize the fabric of the lower crust, compute receiver functions at the crustal and lithospheric scale, to investigate the previously reported Moho gap, and to map the relationship of the Alpine orogen with the adjacent basins and lithospheric blocks.

Temporary deployment - GANSSER Swiss broadband seismic experiment in Bhutan. Abstract

The formation of large mountain ranges does not only affect the amount of mass that one considers for recreation or sports but significantly more: the entire lithosphere beneath and around an orogen must contribute to raise and hold the high peaks. Tremendous forces act on these masses that move with respect to each other during earthquakes, sometimes devastating. These events are the most common and most efficient way to accommodate deformation along collisional plate boundaries, but the 3D architecture of layers and the physical mechanisms involved are not all well understood. Both the structures and the processes related to orogeny must be better comprehended by 3D imaging, by physical numerical modelling, and by augmenting information on the least known parts of the system. This is a fundamental way to improve our knowledge of continental collision, and our understanding of seismic hazard which is one of the highest in and around large mountain ranges, threatening tens of millions of people.Two of the ten “Seismological Grand Challenges” (Lay et al. 2009) are plate boundary system evolution and stress-strain relationship in the lithosphere. The same source recommends portable geophysical instrumentation as one of the key elements to sustain a healthy research future. The present proposal connects tightly these tools and targets: it aims to acquire new, high-resolution geophysical data in the field to then construct and constrain physical models of orogenic processes. Three-dimensional imaging of structures at different scales (foreland basin, crust, lithosphere) is carried out by seismology, especially using mode converted waves sensitive to the boundary of layers, as well as by anomalies of the Earth’s gravitational field, which fill in the picture with bulk properties of the layers. These observations feed numerical models that simulate processes governing orogenic evolution, as for example deformation and petrological phase changes in the lithosphere. Such an interdisciplinary approach is essential to gain comprehensive knowledge of continental collision in general. The present project concentrates especially on (1) metamorphic processes at large scale, as seen and constrained by geophysics, and (2) the continental lower crust including its fabric, rheology, seismicity, and role in mountain building. The geographical focus areas are (3) the best natural laboratory of ongoing continental collision, the Himalayas and Tibet, with special attention on the peculiar Shillong Plateau around which plate tectonic rules seem to break down, and (4) the most studied orogen, the European Alps, where fully 3D structural images and 4D models at high resolution are within reach. Newly acquired geophysical data directly in the core of both orogens, as well as state-of-the-art analysis tools will ensure that this project provides tangible results.
