Der Zweck der internationalen Stiftung Hochalpine Forschungsstationen Jungfraujoch und Gornergrat ist es, wissenschaftliche Untersuchungen zu ermöglichen, die in grosser Höhe oder in hochalpinem Klima ausgeführt werden müssen. Dazu werden auf Jungfraujoch die Forschungsstation sowie das Sphinx-Observatorium und auf Gornergrat das Observatorium Gornergrat-Süd unterhalten. Wissenschafter von Universitäten, technischen Hochschulen und öffentlichen Forschungsinstituten der Mitgliedländer als auch von anderen Ländern können in diesen von der Stiftung zur Verfügung gestellten Labors und Observatorien Forschungsprojekte ausführen.
Lay summary

Die hochalpine Forschungsstation Jungfraujoch ist die höchstgelegene in Europa und sie ist die weltweit am höchsten gelegene, die mit öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln erreichbar ist. Durch diese Tatsache sowie die zentrale Lage in Europa und den Alpen nimmt das Jungfraujoch eine Schlüsselrolle in über 30 nationalen und internationalen Forschungs- und Messprogrammen ein.

Das Observatorium auf dem Gornergrat wurde bis Ende 2010 insbesondere für astrophysikalische Untersuchungen benutzt. Nun wird intensiv an der Umsetzung eines public-outreach Projekts im Bereich astronomischer Beobachtungen gearbeitet. Wobei insbesondere der Ausbildungsfokus im Vordergrund steht. Es sollen dabei Schüler und Studenten auf Sekundar- und Gymnasialstufe angesprochen werden. Ebenso soll die breite Öffentlichkeit nicht zu kurz kommen.

Abstract

1.Summary of the Research PlanThis grant application concerns the subsidy of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) to the International Foundation "High Altitude Research Stations Jungfraujoch and Gornergrat (HFSJG)". Its goal is to enable and support scientific research of international standard at these high mountain research locations for the years 2015-2017.The International Foundation HFSJG dates back to 1930. It is a foundation according to article 80ff. of the Swiss civil law and is under the auspices of the federal government. Member countries are Belgium, Germany, Great Britain, Austria and Switzerland. President of the Foundation is Prof. Erwin Flückiger, former Director of the Foundation. The Director of the Research Stations is Prof. Markus Leuenberger. He is at the main office at the University of Bern. The purpose of the Foundation, as described in the Foundation’s bylaws, is to provide the infrastructure and support for scientific re¬search of international significance that must be carried out at an altitude of 3000-3500 meters above sea level or for which a high alpine environment is required (http://www.hfsjg.ch/).Jungfraujoch, at 3454 m asl, is the highest research station in Europe that is accessible all year round by public transportation. It offers excellent infrastructure. Today it is of importance for environmental researchers, as well as for meteorologists, glaciologists, and researchers in material sciences. Jungfraujoch is the only accessible observation point in Europe with adequate infrastructure that is within the free troposphere most of the year. The Research Station Jungfraujoch is therefore unique for ground-based observations of the free troposphere done by atmosphere physicists and environmental researchers from all over the world. The Montreal and Kyoto Protocol related research and the aerosol program at Jungfraujoch are among the most comprehensive worldwide. The research plan for 2015-2017 consists of about 25 long-term projects with automated measurements and a number of short-term measurement campaigns. In particular the long-term investigations of physics and chemistry of the Earth’s atmosphere are expected to contribute significantly to many internationally and nationally coordinated research networks and programs, as they did in the past. Jung-fraujoch is a primary site in the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC) and a global station in the Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Of particular importance are the links to satellite communities since Jungfraujoch observations allow to calibrate satellite retrieved data with column integrated and finally to the high precision in site recordings at Jungfraujoch. Over the next three years an - at least temporary - extension of our facilities is possible with a partial usage of the former Swisscom Relay Station at the Jungfrau East Ridge. This extension is partly financed through an additional subsidy of the Swiss National Science Foundation for the HFSJG infrastructure for 2013-2016.Gornergrat remains a location for astronomical observations, however, the focus shifts from research to education. The new installation - in its final embodiment - will allow teachers and their school classes as well as the public to remotely run the telescopes and to work on specific modules describing basic astronomical knowledge. It is a project that focusses on science transfer from science experts to the public including different levels of education. In order to tackle present or upcoming shortcomings of the infrastructure at the Research Station at Jungfraujoch, a White Paper has been written and will be published in 2014. It focusses on (i) the need for extending the floor space that can be made available to users at suitable locations and (ii) the need for aligning the interests of the Jungfrau Railway, whose aim is to welcome an increasing number of tourists to Jungfraujoch, and the Research Station, which needs a natural, locally unpolluted atmosphere on Jungfraujoch.
