Wie können wir den Ursprung der Elemente im Universum verstehen? Woher stammt der Wasserstoff im Ozean, der Kohlenstoff in Pflanzen, Kohle und Lebenwesen, der Sauerstoff in der Luft, das Kalzium in unseren Knochen, das Silizium in Elektronikplatinen, das Eisen im Stahl, Silber und Gold im Schmuck, das Blei in Rohren, und Uranium in Kernkraftwerken?Die Amtwort liegt in den Sternen (ausser für Wasserstoff, Lithium und Helium, welche ganz oder hauptsächlich aus dem Urknall stammen) und ihrer Entwicklung und finalen explosiven Endstadien in Einzel- oder Doppelsternsystemen. Das vorliegende Gesuch beschreibt den Versuch solche astrophysikalischen Ereignisse zu beschreiben bzw. numerisch zu simulieren und die Zusammensetzung der ausgeworfenen Materie vorherzusagen. Diese geht in die Entwicklung des Gases in Galaxien ein. Daher deckt dieses Gesuch Fragen von subatomarer Physik, über Sternentwicklung und Sternexplosionen bis hin zur Entwicklung von Galaxien ab.

Um die darin auftretenden Fragen zu beantworten, benötigt es eine Kombination von Themen der Grundlagenphysik, hydrodynamischen Simulationen, sowie der Anwendung in der Entwicklung von Galaxien, d.h. das Verständnis
(a)  von Eigenschaften von Atomkernen, die in Sternen vorkommen
(b)  der  Entwicklung von Sternen
(c) numerischer Simulationen von Supernova-Explosionen massereicher Sterne, kombiniert mit (Magneto-) Hydrodynamik und Strahlungstransport in drei-dimensionalen Rechnungen für rotierende und nicht-rotierende Sterne.
(d) spezifischer Aspekte von Doppelsternsystemen, die zu Röntgen-Bursts und Superbursts, Unterklassen von  Supernovae, sowie Neutronenstern-Verschmelzungen und Gamma-Ray Bursts führen
(e) sowie explosiver Nucleosyntheseprozesse in den oben genannten Szenarien.

Sternwinde und Sternexplosionen sind daher die Triebkräfte der Entwicklung (der atomaren Häufigkeiten) von Galaxien.

SPHYNX: SPH hydrocode for subsonic hydrodynamical instabilities and strong shocks

Abstract
SPHYNX addresses subsonic hydrodynamical instabilities and strong shocks; it is Newtonian, grounded on the Euler-Lagrange formulation of the smoothed-particle hydrodynamics technique, and density based. SPHYNX uses an integral approach for estimating gradients, a flexible family of interpolators to suppress pairing instability, and incorporates volume elements to provides better partition of the unity.

Abstract

Understanding the origin of the elements in the Cosmos, is related (with the exception of H, He, and Li) to stars, their evolution and final explosive endpoints in single or binary systems. This is the main focus of the present proposal, which describes a continuing effort in explaining and understanding such astrophysical events and the composition of their ejecta. Several fundamental aspects are discussed in sections A to D. Section A covers the understanding of nuclear properties, reactions, and aspects of the temperature-dependent high density equations of state, i.e. nuclear features which enter stellar modeling. Section B features stellar evolution of low mass stars, including the accretion onto white dwarfs in binary stellar systems, aiming at a precise knowledge of the fuel composition of type Ia supernova progenitors. Section C describes simulations of core collapse and supernova explosions of massive stars, combining (magneto-) hydrodynamics and radiation transport in 3D calculations of rotating and non-rotating progenitors. Section D focuses on a specific aspects in binary systems with a compact companion, leading to X-ray bursts and superburts (but also white dwarf mergers/collosions for specific classes of type Ia supernovae, and neutron star mergers for short duration X-ray bursts and macrovae), Section E finally focuses on explosive nucleosynthesis processes in the scenarios discussed above, covering all of the classical processes from typical hydrostatic burning, explosive burning, s-, p-. ?p, r-process, as well as the rp-process. Stellar winds and stellar explosions serve as input to galactic evolution. Thus, this proposal covers topics from subatomic physics to the evolution of galaxies
