Im Computer gespeicherte Dateien und Bilder, Musik und Videos bestehen aus Reihen von „0“ und „1“, digitale Bits und Bytes. Die heutige Informationstechnologie basiert auf unserer Möglichkeit, diese Informationen möglichst effizient zu Speichern und zu Lesen. Als nicht-flüchtiger Speicher wird oft die Richtung der Magnetisierung in kleinen magnetischen Bereichen verwendet. In diesem Projekt werden neuartige Materialien und Methoden für das schnelle und energieeffiziente Schalten nicht-flüchtiger magnetischer Speicher untersucht.

Das schnelle Voranschreiten der Miniaturisierung stellt zunehmend höhere Anforderungen an die Realisierung magnetische Speichermedien. Hierbei ist besonders das schnelle und energieeffiziente Schreiben der Information auf immer kleinere magnetische Bits eine grosse Herausforderung. Heute werden hierzu miniaturisierte Magnetspulen verwendet, welche sich aber nicht beliebig weiter verkleinern lassen und ausserdem nicht energiesparend arbeiten. Das vorliegende Projekt untersucht alternative Methoden um den Magnetisierungszustand zu schalten und benützt hierzu die direkte Injektion von spin-polarisierten Strömen in kleine magnetische Bits. Dies bedingt die Erzeugung und den möglichst verlustfreien Transport von Spins auf schnellem und zuverlässigem Weg. Da ein elektrischer Strom normalerweise aus gleich vielen Elektronen mit Spin „up“ und Spin „down“ besteht, muss zunächst ein Übergewicht einer Sorte Spins, d.h. eine Spinpolarisation erzeugt werden. Dies kann erreicht werden, indem der Strom durch ein magnetisches Material fliesst und dadurch die Elektronen ihren Spin nach dessen Magnetisierung ausrichten. Vermittelt durch Spin-Hall, Rashba und weitere Effekte, können sich Spins in speziell gefertigten Materialien zusätzlich an Grenzflächen akkumulieren. Die Effekte basieren auf der Wechselwirkung zwischen dem Spin und der orbitalen Bewegung der Elektronen, und wirken als Drehmoment auf das magnetische Bit ein. Diese Studie wird die Grundstruktur für das Verständnis von Ursprung und Wirkung der erwähnten Effekte erarbeiten, und es werden materialbasierte Strategien zur Effizienzsteigerung von strom-induziertem magnetischen Schreiben untersucht. Die Ergebnisse können zur Entwicklung von elektrisch-adressierbaren nicht-flüchtigen magnetischen Speicherelementen beitragen, welche durch ihren minimalen Stromverbrauch das Konzept des „normally-off/instant-on computing“ ermöglichen.

Abstract

Spin-based electronics (spintronics) takes advantage of the spin degree of freedom to store and process information. A crucial issue for the next generation of spintronic devices is the control of the spin orientation using local electric currents, which enables the writing of magnetic information with significant gains in terms of power, speed, and miniaturization. The goal of this project is to investigate materials and phenomena that support a new paradigm for current-induced magnetization switching. Recent work on ferromagnetic / heavy metal bilayers has shown that the magnetization of the ferromagnet can be reversibly controlled by lateral current injection into the heavy metal layer, enabling the realization of magnetic memories with long term stability, endurance, and high density. Magnetization reversal in such structures is due to the conversion of an electric current into a spin current that takes place in the bulk and at the interface of materials characterized by strong spin-orbit coupling. This proposal aims at developing a comprehensive effort to study current-induced spin-orbit torques in magnetic heterostructures where the ferromagnet is either a metal or an oxide layer. We will address the question of how the combination of different materials gives rise to spin-orbit torques with different symmetry and amplitude, and explore methods to control and modify such torques chemically (by doping), electrically (by gating), and mechanically (by applying stress). We will investigate the spin Hall and interfacial components of the torques as well as their dependence on the electrical conductivity of the layers and crystalline structure, including effects due to epitaxial orientation and interface roughness. Finally, we propose to extend our measurement techniques to the sub-ps time domain to probe dynamical excitations and switching specific to spin-orbit torques. We expect that unusual dynamical states might be induced in response to short current pulses and will provide clues on how fast the magnetization can be reversed for a given set of material parameters. Overall, this study will provide a systematic framework for understanding the origin and action of spin-orbit torques and strategies for improving the efficiency of current-induced magnetization switching based on material design.
