Oberflächenphysik mit Einzelschicht-Materialien und MoleküllagenUltradünne Materialien welche nur eine oder wenige Atomlagen dick sind erfahren seit der Entdeckung von Graphen ein grosses Interesse in der Grundlagenforschung. In diesem Projekt werden Einzellagen von Graphen und von hexagonalem Bornitrid mit CVD auf Metallunterlagen synthetisiert, sowie in einem späteren Schritt auch weitere zweidimensionale Materialien wie Molybdändisulfid oder Wolframdiselenid. Diese Filme werden als Unterlagen für magnetische Moleküle verwenden, durch Ionenbeschuss kontrolliert durchlöchert, oder von diesen Substraten abgelöst und auf isolierende Unterlagen transferiert. Mit Hilfe ultrakurzer Laserpulse werden die Zeitskalen elektronischer Prozesse in diesen Materialien untersucht.

Inhalt und Ziel

Die von uns verwendete Herstellungsmethode erlaubt das grossflächige Wachstum solcher Einzelschichtmaterialien, welche mit Photoemission und Rastertunnelmikroskopie genaustens untersucht werden können, inklusive der Dynamik angeregter elektronischer Zustzände. Bornitrid ist für die Studie adsorbierter Moleküle besonders interessant, da sich die Wechselwirkung mit der Unterlage gut kontrollieren lässt. Daneben wird eine von uns entdeckte Methode zur Herstellung präziser, zwei Nanometer grosser Löcher in diesen Materialien weiterentwickelt. Unsere Proben erlauben den Transfer solcher Filme bei bekannter Kristallorientierung, was wir zur Herstellung von Schichtstapeln mit definiert verdrehten Einzelschichten ausnutzen möchten.

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext

Unsere Arbeiten werden zum Verständnis dieser Einschichtmaterialien und deren Integration in verschiedenen technologischen Anwendungen beitragen.

Abstract

This proposal asks for funding for 4 Ph.D. students over a period of 36 months. It covers two projects, which shall be labelled as follows:A) Hexagonal boron nitride layers, graphene and adsorbed molecular layers:Our capability for growing high-quality boron nitride and graphene single layers on monocrystalline metal films by low-pressure CVD at the four-inch wafer scale is further exploited. Exploring new methods for the transfer of such films to other substrates we propose to build stacks of such materials with defined relative crystal orientation. Monolayers of magnetic rare-earth nitride endofullerenes on h-BN/Ni(111) will be studied in terms of orientational order of the carbon cage and the endohedral unit on the one hand, and the magnetic order on the other hand, addressing issues of magnetic anisotropy. Finally, we take advantage of our recent discovery that noble gas atoms can be brought between a h-BN sheet and the Rh(111) surface by low-energy ion implantation, where they are immobilized at specific sites within the superstructure unit cell. This is used as the starting point for further investigations involving ion implantation of different atomic species, in view of promoting chemistry across an inert single-layer membrane.B) Electron dynamics in single-layer materials - valleytronics:We propose an investigation of the intrinsic timescales of scattering and exciton lifetimes in materials suitable for valleytronic devices. Such materials have a specific band structure with several inequivalent conduction band minima, termed valleys. The h-BN single layer on Ni(111) has this property and will be the first system to be studied. It will be followed by single layers of transition metal dichalcogenides like MoS2 and WSe2, for which CVD growth recipes will be implemented. This project requires the setup of a high-harmonic source in order to perform time-resolved ARPES measurements at the Brillouin zone boundaries of these materials.
-
