Lay Summary (German)

Lead

Abstract

Globalization processes, environmental catastrophes, and political conflicts of the past and present have contributed to increasing migratory movements all over the world. As a result, large numbers of immigrants have made cultural diversity a common characteristic of schools, necessitating research on acculturation issues. In the tradition of cross-cultural psychology, contact between individuals of different cultural backgrounds is described in terms of changes in behavior and attitudes, commonly subsumed under the umbrella term of acculturation. The school context is of particular interest to acculturation research as it is a setting where acculturation takes place. The increasing number of publications using an acculturation approach in the school context is evidence for the rising interest of scholars in this topic. However, there is lack of systematic and comparable approaches for studying acculturation in schools. The project presented here is the first to systematically address the question of the meaning and implications of acculturation research in school contexts and will thus significantly inform the peer discussion of the issue. The main objective of the planned research is to analyze the content of acculturation research in the school context. A qualitative data analysis approach will be applied using the model of deductive category application, at the core of which is the application of predetermined, theoretically grounded analytical categories to the data. The design of the study includes the following stages: (i) the selection of the sources for content analysis, (ii) the elaboration of analytical categories based on the theoretical framework, (iii) the coding of the selected sources, (iv) the evaluation of the categories, and (v) the description of the categories. The study aims to (i) systematize contemporary acculturation research in the school context in terms of its theoretical and methodological conceptualization of acculturation and (ii) present a systematic review of the role of acculturation in the following areas: psychological adjustment and academic achievement of immigrant students, social interactions in multicultural schools, teachers’ attitudes and teaching in multicultural classrooms. The ultimate goal of the study is to provide new directions and suggestions for further research on acculturation in the school context.
