Dadurch wird breite Forschung abgedeckt, die ohne Tiefbohrungen nicht behandelt werden kann (Naturgefahren, Umwelt- und Klimaänderungen, Biosphäre des Untergrundes, Ursprung des Lebens, Dynamik und Prozesse des Erdinnern, angewandte Aspekte wie Rohstoffe und Geothermie).

Inhalt und Ziel der Mitgliedschaften

Tiefbohrungen ermöglichen Zugang zu verborgenen geologischen und biologischen Archiven im Erdinnern. Um diese Bohrungen durchführen zu können, hat sich die internationale Forschungsgemeinschaft in grossen Programmen zusammen geschlossen: i) im Rahmen des 'International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) durch das marine Tiefbohrungen auf allen Weltmeeren ermöglicht werden; und ii) das 'International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP)', welches diese marine Perspektive ergänzt, in dem es kontinentale Tiefbohrungen ermöglicht. Damit steht die 'gesamte' Erdoberfläche und deren Untergrund nahtlos als potentielles Bohrziel für die Schweizer Forschungsgemeinschaft zur Verfügung. Es können auch verschiedene Bohrinfrastrukturen und Bohrlochinstrumente durch die Forscher der Mitgliedsländer benutzt werden.

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext der Bohrprogramme

Wissenschaftliche Tiefbohrungen liefern neue und wichtige Informationen nicht nur über neue Themen der Grundlagenforschung der Geo- und Biowissenschaften, sondern sie ermöglichen auch neue Einblicke in gesellschaftlich relevante Themen. Dazu gehören die Untersuchung von Naturgefahren wie Erdbeben, Tsunamis, Vulkane und Meteorite, eine nachhaltige Nutzung der Rohstoffe, und die Auswirkungen und Milderung der Klima- und Umweltveränderungen. Die grosse Anzahl der laufenden IODP und ICDP Projekte, sowie die internationale Sichtbarkeit erlaubt es Schweizer Forschenden, neue Themen in der Forschung aktiv mitzubestimmen und somit die Forschungslandschaft entscheidend zu mitzuprägen.

Abstract

Continental scientific drilling allows to investigate the geological subsurface of the continents including its fluids and biosphere. As logistics and costs of such drilling campaigns are significant, the science communities of 24 nations joined during the last decades to form the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP). Forces were merged to define highest-priority drilling goals through international collaborations. Switzerland joined the ICDP in 2009 as regular member, offering now the Swiss scientists the opportunity to propose, conduct and sample drilling operations anywhere on the continents. Only this membership enables Swiss scientist to cooperate in this context with their international partners and to stay at the research front actively determining directions of critical and timely topics. The past years have shown, that Switzerland took intensely advantage of this opportunity by co-proposing a series of drilling projects that resulted in excellent findings and publications. This proposal seeks funds to extend the Swiss ICDP membership after the end of the current commitment into 2014 and beyond, and summarizes the past achievements, ongoing initiatives and future active Swiss involvement in the ICDP.One stronghold of Swiss ICDP activity were numerous lake drilling initiatives, addressing paleoclimatic, paleoenvironmental and paleotectonic topics at the scale of multiple Quaternary glacial interglacial cycles. Several new initiatives are currently proposed in lakes on almost all continents, some of them (Colonia, Brazil; lakes in SE Iberia) extend the targeted period of research well into the Neogene. Two proposals address drilling in filled basins: the glacially overdeepened troughs around the Alps, and the Roer Valley Graben system in Holland. Extending the time window even further, one Swiss-led proposal suggests to drill Carboniferous carbonate build-ups in northern Spain in order reconstruct the paleoenvironment of these particular old depositional systems. The natural hazard topic is a key in the currently ongoing Campi Flegrei Drilling Project, which drills into an active volcanic area. A new general direction of ICDP will be environmental research, as addressed by the proposal to drill arsenic-contaminated aquifers in Asia, also under the co-leadership of Swiss scientists. The timely issue of CO2 sequestration in the subsurface (also within Switzerland) requires detailed studies through drillholes and experiments, as followed up by several Swiss research groups. A spectacular 'Alpine' vision, to drill into the lower continental crust and upper mantle in the Ivrea Zone (Switzerland, Italy), is currently being put forward as a project idea that would certainly contribute new concepts of petrologic and geodynamic processes in the Earth.A philosophy of 'drilling without limits' will be achieved by close cooperation between the continental and the marine scientific drilling communities, accessible through concomitant membership in the Integrated Ocean Discovery Program, in which Switzerland is also an active member. Only with continued participation in ICDP and IODP, scientists from all Swiss universities and research institutes will have full access to any worldwide drilling target, be it marine or continental, thus providing the Swiss science community access to globe-wide scientific targets.
