Die Mitgliedschaft in den beiden grossen internationalen wissenschaftlichen Tiefbohrprogrammen IODP und ICDP erlaubt es den Forschenden an Schweizer Universitäten, aktiv Bohrungen vorzuschlagen, mitzuleiten und zu beproben. Dadurch wird breite Forschung abgedeckt, die ohne Tiefbohrungen nicht behandelt werden kann (Naturgefahren, Umwelt- und Klimaänderungen, Biosphäre des Untergrundes, Ursprung des Lebens, Dynamik und Prozesse des Erdinnern, angewandte Aspekte wie Rohstoffe und Geothermie).

Inhalt und Ziel der Mitgliedschaften

Tiefbohrungen ermöglichen Zugang zu verborgenen geologischen und biologischen Archiven im Erdinnern. Um diese Bohrungen durchführen zu können, hat sich die internationale Forschungsgemeinschaft in grossen Programmen zusammen geschlossen: i) im Rahmen des 'International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) durch das marine Tiefbohrungen auf allen Weltmeeren ermöglicht werden; und ii) das 'International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP)', welches diese marine Perspektive ergänzt, in dem es kontinentale Tiefbohrungen ermöglicht. Damit steht die 'gesamte' Erdoberfläche und deren Untergrund nahtlos als potentielles Bohrziel für die Schweizer Forschungsgemeinschaft zur Verfügung. Es können auch verschiedene Bohrinfrastrukturen und Bohrlochinstrumente durch die Forscher der Mitgliedsländer benutzt werden.

Wissenschaftlicher und gesellschaftlicher Kontext der Bohrprogramme

Wissenschaftliche Tiefbohrungen liefern neue und wichtige Informationen nicht nur über neue Themen der Grundlagenforschung der Geo- und Biowissenschaften, sondern sie ermöglichen auch neue Einblicke in gesellschaftlich relevante Themen. Dazu gehören die Untersuchung von Naturgefahren wie Erdbeben, Tsunamis, Vulkane und Meteorite, eine nachhaltige Nutzung der Rohstoffe, und die Auswirkungen und Milderung der Klima- und Umweltveränderungen. Die grosse Anzahl der laufenden IODP und ICDP Projekte, sowie die internationale Sichtbarkeit erlaubt es Schweizer Forschenden, neue Themen in der Forschung aktiv mitzubestimmen und somit die Forschungslandschaft entscheidend zu mitzuprägen.

Abstract

This document presents a strategy and science plan for continued membership of the Swiss science community in the European Consortium for Ocean Research Drilling (ECORD) to participate in the new International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP), 2013-2023. Scientific ocean drilling provides the only means to access valuable information recorded in the sediments and rocks beneath the seafloor, to conduct seafloor experiments, and to monitor conditions and active processes in remote marine environments. Since the initiation of scientific ocean drilling, expedition results and experiments have transformed the understanding of our planet by addressing some of the most fundamental questions about Earth’s dynamic history, deep crustal processes, and structure. A review of Swiss IODP activities from the last ten years documents that Swiss scientists conduct forefront research on a wide range of IODP related topics. It further shows that the Swiss scientific community cannot only profit enormously by continued membership in ECORD, but can decisively provide a leading role in directing deep sea research through ocean drilling. Continued membership in ECORD/IODP is particularly important as Switzerland does not maintain an oceanographic research fleet given its land-locked position in central Europe. A philosophy of 'drilling without limits' will be achieved by close cooperation between the marine and the continental scientific drilling communities, accessible through concomitant membership in the International Continental Drilling Project (ICDP), in which Switzerland is also an active member. With continued participation in IODP and ICDP, scientists from all Swiss universities and research institutes will have full access to any worldwide drilling target, be it marine or continental, thus providing the Swiss science community access to globe-wide scientific targets. With the new IODP science plan as a guide, the Swiss geoscience and biogeoscience community has defined three main focus directions: (1) Climate and Ocean changes; (2) Earth Dynamics; and (3) Biosphere Frontiers, which address fundamental questions about Earth’s climate, deep life, and geodynamics. These themes document where Swiss scientists are active, where continued participation as an ECORD member is essential, and where Switzerland contributes to the understanding of multifaceted processes that shape the Earth and determine the habitability of our planet. Specific topics that will be addressed with future participation in IODP include: global climate change (past and present) and consequences for life, chemical fluxes in the oceans, ocean acidification and hypoxia, geohazards, the deep subseafloor biosphere and life in extreme environments, as well as deep Earth processes that occur at mid-ocean ridges, continental margins and subduction zones and which drive plate tectonics. Future membership in ECORD/IODP brings a new focus on microbiology and will promote interdisciplinary research and new collaborations among the Swiss geoscience and biogeoscience communities. With its collaborative research culture and with involvement of research groups new to IODP, Switzerland can take a leading role in performing novel and exciting research at the boundary between classical climate, solid earth and biosphere research.
