New materials obtained by the self-assembly of micro- and nanoparticles (MPs and NPs) hold the potential to revolutionize a vast range of technological applications due to the extraordinary properties of their nano(micro)-constituents and to the possibility of accurate nano(micro)structural control. Despite the huge development in the synthesis of complex MPs and NPs, the quest for a general way to control the properties of the final material starting from the properties of the building blocks still faces outstanding open challenges. True progress is hindered by the lack of control and characterization of the basic particle properties and of the way they interact. In particular, adequate tools to access in situ the structure and dynamics during the assembly process are currently absent. I will shed light on this missing link for a specific class of systems and an assembly strategy which bear great fundamental interest and high applied potential: two-dimensional (2D) materials obtained by MP and NP-self-assembly at liquid interfaces (SALI). Self-assembled 2D materials are indeed highly relevant in physics, electronics and biology and find use in many applications, including solar cells, thin films and coatings, sensing, membranes and capsules for separation and drug delivery. I will use specifically designed model systems and innovative experimental tools to seek answers for open fundamental questions which lay at the basis of the core mechanisms behind MP/NP-SALI and demonstrate that such knowledge can be used towards the fabrication of such 2D functional materials. The project is divided into three highly interconnected subprojects, each of which makes use of non-conventional experimental approaches to study several aspects of MP/NP-SALI.The first subproject revolves around a new method, which I have recently devised based on cryo-SEM and which gives unprecedented quantitative access to the properties of MPs and NPs at liquid interfaces, to investigate the effect that key parameters such as size, shape and surface topography have on interfacial assembly. This will be combined with direct measurements of the forces on colloidal particles at liquid interfaces by AFM to yield an exhaustive picture that relates the single-particle surface properties to the resulting interfacial assembly. Such knowledge will be finally used to attempt the deposition of aligned nanostructures from model anisotropic NPs on templates, where directional capillary interactions at the liquid interface provide the microscopic alignment and the template provides macroscopic anisotropy. The second subproject aims at using binary mixtures of charged MPs at liquid interfaces to obtain complex 2D crystalline lattices through the application of controlled shear, and monitoring their response to deformation. When mixtures of charged MPs are spread at interfaces, they rapidly form a disordered monolayer; long-range repulsion and polydispersity freezes the structure into a 2D glass. By using controlled shear applied via a novel type of interfacial microrheometer and particle tracking, I propose to study the structural evolution of the 2D glass towards the equilibrium, minimum-energy crystalline structure that can be theoretically calculated. Additionally, I envisage using a combined AFM/fluorescence microscope to apply controlled normal deformations at the interface and visualize the response. This subproject will shed light on fundamental aspects of the dynamical response of disordered/ordered 2D model systems but will also yield a strategy to produce controlled binary 2D crystals for particle lithography.Finally, I will also produce a novel class of MPs which display directional interactions through “patches” on their surface. Patchy particles have attracted vast theoretical interest due to the complexity of achievable structures and their relevance as models for biological objects. I propose to overcome the current experimental limitations in particle fabrication by directly writing the patches (hydrophobic, charge) onto the MPs by means of Dip Pen Nanolithography. The wetting properties of such patchy particles will be studied in situ by FreSCa cryo-SEM and through the creation of a library of particles with prescribed structure and properties, I will be able to specifically design their SALI into 2D structures which may find application in the growth of optical materials. The proposed research is expected to have a large impact on the rapidly developing field of self-assembled materials through a rigorous approach aimed at disclosing fundamental knowledge on a highly relevant self-assembly process and class of materials.
