Lay summary
Investigated is the structure of hadrons, particles which participate in the
strong interaction, which is one of the four fundamental forces of nature.
The best known examples are the proton and the neutron (called nucleons), which
are the building blocks of atomic nuclei and dominate the observable matter
in the universe. They are composed of elementary particles called quarks.
Unlike any other composite system, most of their mass is generated by dynamical
effects from the interaction of the quarks. As an example, the masses of the
quarks contribute only about 0.6% - 1.8% to the mass of the nucleon,
more than 98% of the mass of ordinary matter arises from dynamical effects of
the strong interaction.

Our activities concentrate on two main pillars. A program for the investigation
of photon induced meson production reactions runs in the framework of the
TAPS-, Crystal Ball-, and Crystal Barrel collaborations at the electron accelerators
MAMI in Mainz and ELSA in Bonn. Currently, the main emphasis is on the measurement
of single and double polarization observables. These experiments have become possible
due to the development of linearly- and circularly polarized photon beams and
the installation of polarized buthanol cryo-targets (longitudinal and transverse
using different magnetic coils). These experiments are expected to answer many
long standing problems in hadron physics. Our group has during the last few years
in particular developed the experimental and analysis tools to investigate
also reactions of quasi-free neutrons (bound in the deuteron or other light nuclei),
which have resulted in very interesting and unexpected results.

In parallel to these experimental activities our group is involved in the
technical developments of the PANDA detector, which will be the main
working horse for the investigation of the strong interaction via
proton - antiproton collisions at the planned FAIR facility at GSI in the
next decade. We have developed key components for the electromagnetic
calorimeter. In collaboration with groups from Bochum, Giessen, Frankfurt (D),
Groningen (NL), and Orsay (F) we have constructed and tested a 192-channel
prototype of the electromagnetic forward calorimeter and will start construction
of the forward wall during the 2013/2014 period.

Abstract

The research described in this proposal aims at the fundamental properties of the strong interaction in the regime where it cannot be treated by perturbative methods, i.e. on the energy scale typical for hadrons andtheir excited states. Development of this field is in a rapid phase both intheory, where lattice gauge approaches make large progress, as well as in experiment, where a large program using electromagnetic induced reactions is world-wide pursued and will be later complemented by the anti-proton facility at the new FAIR accelerator complex. During the period of 2013/2014 this project will still have two pillars. At the electron accelerators ELSA in Bonn (maximum energy 3.5 GeV)and MAMI in Mainz (maximum energy 1.5 GeV; very intense, high quality beams)we are involved in large programs for the measurement of tagged-photon inducedmeson production reactions off free- and quasi-free nucleons and off nuclei. In the framework of the A2-, Crystal Ball-, Crystal Barrel-, and TAPS-collaborations, we have over the last decade significantly contributed to set up state-of-the-art experiments, which have world-wide uniquecapabilities. They combine linearly and circularly polarized tagged photon beams with longitudinally and transversely polarized targets (butanol and deuterated butanol targets of frozen-spin type) with highly efficient,almost the full solid angle covering, electromagnetic calorimeters for the detection of photons, neutrons, and charged particles. These experiments allowto measure total cross sections, all single polarization observables(beam-, target-, and recoil-polarization) and all double polarizationobservables accessible with polarized beam and target (E, G, H, F). Incomparison to other experiments, in particular the CLAS detector at JLAB in the USA, these experiments are optimized for final states with many neutralparticles (photons, neutrons). This allows to measure reactions with neutralmeson pairs (double pi0, pi0-eta, pi0-omega) which are important for cascadedecays of excited states. It also allows to study photoproduction of neutralmesons of quasi-free neutrons, and even neutral meson pairs off the neutron. Such final states are inaccessible at CLAS, which is optimized for the detection of charged particles and can only reconstruct one neutral particle via missing mass methods. Our group is in particular involved into the study ofmeson production reactions off quasi-free neutrons, which are needed for theextraction of the isospin composition of the electromagnetic transitionamplitudes. For this, we have developed the necessary analysis andinterpretation tools. After a last planned significant upgrade of the triggercapability of the Crystal Barrel in Bonn (planned for Spring 2013) allexperiments will have reached their full capabilities and intensive running anddata taking is planned for 2013/2014, which is expected to solve many important issues. The other pillar is the R\&D, and in 2013/14 also constructionwork, for the PANDA experiment at the planned antiproton ring of the FAIR facility at the GSI Darmstadt. We will continue to develop hardware for the detector, test and improve components of the electromagnetic calorimeter, and start with the construction of major parts of the calorimeter.A first version of the 192-channel prototype of the forward endcap wasconstructed in collaboration with Bochum university in 2011 and has been used in test runs at the Bonn ELSA and CERN accelerators. Currently (2012), further optimization of this setup and further tests are planned, which will providethe necessary data for the final decisions about photosensors (APD's, VPT's,VPTT's) and other components. In parallel we will set up the high-voltage and low-voltage systems for the forward endcap. During 2013/2014 we will produce the preamplifiers developed by our group for all modules of the forward detector(roughly 7300 pieces) so that assembly of this sub-detector can start in 2015.
