Erwachsene Laubbäume in einer CO2-reichen Welt

Pflanzen brauchen das CO2-Gas zum Leben. Mit Sonnenlicht und Wasser machen sie in der Photosynthese daraus Zucker, aus dem sie ihre Körpersubstanz (Zellulose, Holz) aufbauen. Es ist aber unklar, ob ein grösseres Angebot an CO2 tatsächlich zu mehr Wachstum führt, da Pflanzen viele andere chemische Elemente für das Leben brauchen, die nicht vermehrt verfügbar sind. In diesem Experiment werden 35 m hohe Rottannen (Fichten) künstlich mit einer erhöhten CO2-Konzentration konfrontiert, wie sie gegen Ende dieses Jahrhunderts herrschen wird. Ein 45 m hoher Baukran schafft Zugang zu den Baumkronen am Juranordfuss bei Hofstetten-Flüh nahe Basel. Wir studieren die CO2-Aufnahme, das Wachstum, den Wasserverbrauch und den Ernährungszustand der Bäume. Auch wie und ob Bodenpilze vom zusätzlichen CO2 etwas abbekommen wird studiert. Das Projekt soll zeigen, ob unsere wichtigste Waldbaumart aus einer CO2-Anreicherung der Luft einen Nutzen zieht. Bis jetzt sieht es nicht so aus.

Abstract

This three-year extension of the ongoing CO2 enrichment experiment at the Swiss Canopy Crane research site will assess the carbon, water and nutrient relations of adult Picea abies (Norway spruce) exposed to a future CO2 scenario. The work includes tracing the fate of isotopically labelled carbon within trees and their rhizosphere, assessing growth of stems and roots and hydrological implications.
