Lay summary

“Stellarium Gornergrat” is an astronomical facility to be installed at Gornergrat for educational purpose with the goal to provide access to astronomical observation to the public in general and to young people.

This astronomical facility is designed to deliver professional performances and to be remote controlled from any location with the help of an easy-to-use web-interface. It is conceived to become an ideal platform for the education of students, for visitors at the Gornergrat as well as the general public

Astronomical research conducted at UniGe and UniBe is recognized worldwide.Exoplanets, exploration of the solar system, and early picture of our Universe capture the public imagination and interest for science. Remote access to a telescope with the possibility to conduct small research programs on these themes allows building the interest for science by sharing the excitement of the discovery.

The educational programs are targeted to make this facility a major tool foreducations. They will be planed and organized in close collaboration with teachersand with existing Swiss infrastructure for science outreach and communications atUniGe and UniBe.

Abstract

“Stellarium Gornergrat” is an astronomical facility to be installed at Gornergrat for educational purpose with the goal to provide access to astronomical observation to the public in general and to young people. The clean, and dry air of this site as well as its location on the southern side of the Alpes maintains, on average, favourable meteorological conditions. It has been recognized by professional astronomers as one of the best sites in Switzerland for astronomical observations. This astronomical facility is designed to deliver professional performances and to be remote controlled from any location with the help of an easy-to-use web-interface. It is conceived to become an ideal platform for the education of students, for visitors at the Gornergrat as well as the general public, and thus to evolve into a prime site in Switzerland for astronomy and science education.Stellarium Gornergrat is organized around three different elements: (1) The observation infrastructure at Gornergrat, namely a large telescope and others specialized observing tools (2) A Web portal to control the facility, access to the observations and educational tools and packages. (3) Educational materials and programs.Astronomical research conducted at UniGe and UniBe is recognized worldwide. Exoplanets, exploration of the solar system, and early picture of our Universe capture the public imagination and interest for science. Remote access to a telescope with the possibility to conduct small research programs on these themes allows building the interest for science by sharing the excitement of the discovery. The use of a telescope through computer access makes this installation very similar to the real observational methods used by professional astronomers today. The team assembled for this project has a wide expertise in many different areas. It is composed of well-known Swiss researchers, technical experts in instrument and telescope building and education specialists. From the pedagogical point of view, the project is built on features considered as state-of-the-art in science education: (1) out-of-school learning places as a particular way of creating authentic, motivating and cognitively engaging contexts for science learning; (2) focus on active participation of students, based on problems and tasks using real observatory data; (3) astronomy as a stimulating science subject to share the excitement of investigation and discovery to the classroom. The educational programs are targeted to make this facility a major tool for educations. They will be planed and organized in close collaboration with teachers and with existing Swiss infrastructure for science outreach and communications at UniGe and UniBe.The whole installation is devised at 658’000. UniGe, UniBe, HFSJG and Burgermeinde Zermatt already secured about half of the funding. An additional 20% is been searched through sponsors. The missing 30% of the project cost is requested through this proposal to establish the educational packages, to design and build the web-portal, used to conduct observation and to access the archive.
