Grassland is important for Switzerland and contributes to sustainable feed and food production worldwide. Novel grass breeding schemes based on a more efficient exploitation of heterosis have the potential to substantially outperform current forage grass varieties in terms of biomass yield, resistance and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. However, current attempts to produce hybrids in forage crops have major limitations: Firstly, efficient line production is hampered by self-incompatibility (SI), a genetic mechanism that efficiently promotes cross pollination, and secondly, tools to control pollination for efficient hybrid seed production are missing.The overall goal of the proposed research is to identify, characterize and utilize biological mechanisms in forage grasses to control pollination, which can - among a broad range of other applications - be exploited in hybrid breeding schemes. The proposed research will focus on the two-locus SI system, fertility restoring self-compatibility loci (SC) and male sterility mechanisms in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.), which will serve as a diploid model for other major grass species.This goal will be achieved by a unique cross-disciplinary approach combining cutting-edge phenotypic technologies and expertise in hybrid maize breeding available at the hosting group of Crop Science (ETH Zurich), state of the art genetic and genomic tools established at the Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics, Aarhus University, Denmark, and excellent genetic resources available from Molecular Ecology and Fodder Crop Breeding at Agroscope Reckenholz-Tänikon Research Station (ART) (Figure 1). The proposed SNSF Professorship at ETH has the potential to strengthen the research strategy of ETH to improve aspects of the “World Food System” (productive grassland is the basis for efficient livestock production) and to complement the teaching portfolio of ETH by adding valuable education elements based on molecular breeding strategies in plants for bachelor and master level students of Agricultural Science. Close interaction of collaborating parties will not only enable rapid scientific progress but also allow for efficient dissemination of knowledge and implementation of the results into practical breeding.
