Lay summary
With the start of data taking at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, an exciting new era in the study of the subatomic world has begun. During the next decade and longer, the LHC is expected to shed light on some of the central questions on the fundamental structure of
matter. This Institutional Partnership (IP) proposal intends to build a collaboration between the Paul Scherrer Institute (Switzerland), the University of Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina) and the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (Croatia) to jointly exploit the LHC potential in the context of the CMS Collaboration. This IP proposal aims to help both Eastern European partners to achieve their development goals by establishing a collaboration around two common projects related to the CMS experiment: (i) the participation in the upgrade project of the
CMS pixel detector, and (ii) a joint physics analysis project involving a collaboration between experimentalists and theorists to explore possible new physics scenarios at the LHC.

Abstract

The goals of this proposals are (i) integration of the CMS group of the Rudjer Boskovic Institute (Zagreb) into the CMS pixel upgrade project by establishing a strong collaboration between the PSI and RBI groups, (ii) establishing a strong collaboration in physics analysis between experimentalists and theorists from the 3 participating institutions around a common analysis project, (iii) introducing young researchers from Sarajevo to experimental work and so pose the future foundation of a restart of experimental physics in Sarajevo.
