Lay summary

The direct conversion of heat into electrical energy avoiding the detour through mechanical heat engines has a long history starting in the early 19-th century. Despite the long history, application of thermoelectricity in electrical power generation (Seebeck effect) as well as in electrically powered cooling/heating devices (Peltier effect) are not so widely spread so far, because present days equipments possess a rather limited efficiency. This is mainly problem of the lack of materials with optimal thermoelectric properties in relevant temperature ranges. 

The present project aims at changing this situation through the search for new materials which satisfy various requirements such as stability at high temperatures and the feasibility for fabricating devices. In this context not only the synthesis of new materials is important, but also nano-structuring will play an important role. 

The goal is moreover to find new mechanisms which may boost the thermoelectric performance. Among these, the focus will be on confinement effects (superlattices) and the strong electronic correlation effects. The composition of our teams allows as to cover chemistry and synthesis of novel materials, mainly transition metal oxides, the fabrication of artificially structured and externally tunable devices as well as the exploration of novel mechanisms from the theoretical side.

Abstract

The objective of the project is the development of thermoelectric oxides with improved ZT values, better thermal stability in air, lower price, better availability and lower weight for the efficient direct conversion of heat into electricity. Among the complex (e.g. perovskite- delafossite-, and Ruddlesden-Popper- type) families of oxides, p- and n-type materials exhibiting prospective TE properties are found. However, the optimization of ZT is still a challenge to be solved taking into account that Seebeck,the electrical resistivity and the thermal conductivity are interdependent. The observable limitation for increasing the TE performance should be overcome by changing the composition, and by forming lower-dimensional solids. The members of the consortium will focus their expertise on developing new nanostructured phases. The concept of artificial heterostructures with 2DEGs will be understood in detail and used to produce bulk nanostructures with innovative soft chemistry processes. These unconventional thermoelectric materials with strongly correlated electron systems will be tested in high temperature thermoelectric converter systems.
