Lay summary
This project combines two subprojects situated in surface physics that are related to each other and offer broad synergies. The characterization and control of spin polarization at surfaces is the common link. In Project A we continue to investigate modern template surfaces for molecular self-assembly based on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) or graphene layers on transition metals. They offer two kinds of functionality: stable scaffold structures for the anchoring of molecules with a periodicity of about three nanometers, and in the case of h-BN, decoupling of the molecular orbitals from the electron sea of the metallic substrate. In order to connect individual molecules on these layers to the macroscopic world we will detect light-emission from individual molecules in scanning tunneling microscope junctions. Spin polarization of molecular orbitals will be measured by means of a novel Mott detector design that is currently implemented. A second activity will explore new approaches for the formation of graphene/h-BN heterostructures, both vertical and horizontal. Due to the similarity in their structure and lattice constant, h-BN is potentially the ideal dielectric for electronic devices based on graphene.In project B we investigate momentum dependent spin-structures in low dimensional systems, induced by the Rashba effect and related effects involving the spin-orbit-interaction. Specifically, the tuning of the spin splitting in quantum well states in few monolayer thick Pb films on Si(111) by interface engineering will be studied. Moreover, we have started an effort of studying spin-polarized states on the surfaces of topological insulators. The unique capabilities of our spin-resolved photoemission end station at the SLS gives us a leading edge in the identification of topological states and their spin textures.

Abstract

This proposal asks for funding for 5 Ph.D. students over a period of 36 months. It covers three projects, which shall be labelled as follows:A) Molecular Spintronics in Self-Assembled Two-Dimensional NanostructuresIn this subproject the functionality of self-assembling structures of molecules on sp2-derived template layers like hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) or graphene grown on transition metals is explored, as well as the growth of vertical and horizontal graphene / h-BN heterostructures. The development of new instrumentation is an important part of this project. Specifically, a home-built, new type of Mott detector for spin-polarized photoemission will be commissioned and implemented in our photoelectron spectrometer. Moreover, our setup for STM tip induced fluorescence measurements will be improved for higher sensitivity (2 PhD students).B) Spin Structures and New Spintronic MaterialsThe unique capabilities of our spin-resolved photoemission end station at the SLS are exploited in this subproject. The focus of the research is on spin-orbit interaction induced spin structures in quantum well states, and how they can be controlled, and on the growth of thin films and heterostructures of topological insulators (2 PhD students).C) Time-Resolved PhotoemissionTime-resolved photoemission and two-photon photoemission experiments will be performed by means of a display-type analyzer in order to study electron dynamics in momentum space. With this instrument, excited state scattering lifetimes will be studied in systems where spin-orbit interaction induces spin splittings and spin textures in momentum space, thereby imposing spin selection rules in the scattering processes (1 PhD student).
