Lay summary
The Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHÉS) was founded in 1958 by Léon MOTCHANE, an industrialist with a passion for mathematics, whose ambition was to create a research centre in Europe, which would become a counterpart to the renowned Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), Princeton, USA. Since its creation, the Institute has developed in accordance with the vision of its founder: it has become a reference point for excellence in the international scientific community, with significant achievements in mathematics and theoretical physics. The atmosphere of free exchanges among scientists, whatever their fields of study and their origins, has also become a key factor in its attraction. From an institutional point of view, IHÉS has the legal status of a foundation in the public interest. The institute's scientific team, which is deliberately kept small in size (five permanent professors and one holder of the Léon Motchane Chair) is of exceptional calibre. Each of its members has been awarded one or several prestigious international prizes (2002 Fields Medal awarded to Laurent Lafforgue, Kyoto Prize in Basic Sciences awarded by the Inamori Foundation in 2002 to Mikhail Gromov, CNRS Gold Medal awarded to Alain Connes in 2005…). Seven out of the ten mathematicians, who are or have been permanent professors at IHÉS, have received the Fields Medal, the highest international distinction in mathematics.

Abstract

In the near future IHES will continue working as a world leading institute in mathematics and theoretical physics, and try to strengthen its position as a leader in theoretical biology. Challenges to be met in the next 3 years include:- choosing a new director at Jean-Pierre Bourguignon's retirement;- choosing a new CEO for the Board, at Philippe Lagayette's retirement; - hiring a 3rd professor in theoretical physics;- appointing a strong candidate for the Schlumberger Chair, whose aim will be to bridge pure and industrial mathematics.See the accompanying letter for more details.
