Investigated is the structure of hadrons, particles which participate in the strong interaction, which is one of the four fundamental forces of nature. The best known examples are the proton and the neutron (called nucleons), which are the building blocks of atomic nuclei and dominate the observable matter in the universe. They are composed of elementary particles called quarks. Unlike any other composite system, most of their mass is generated by dynamical effects from the interaction of the quarks. As an example, the masses of the quarks contribute only about 0.6% - 1.8% to the mass of the nucleon, more than 98% of the mass of ordinary matter arises from dynamical effects of the strong interaction. Our activities concentrate on two main pillars. A large program for the investigation of photon induced meson production reactions is run in the framework of the TAPS-, Crystal Ball-, and Crystal Barrel collaborations at the electron accelerators MAMI in Mainz and ELSA in Bonn.Up to now results from photoproduction reactions have not allowed to extract unambiguously the contributions of the involved nucleon resonances, since angular distributions alone do not sufficiently constrain the partial wave analyses. The development of circularly- and linearly polarized photon beams, and the installation of polarized targets during the last three years at both facilities, opens completely new windows via the measurement of single and double polarization observables. These experiments are expected to answer many long standing problems in hadron physics. Our group in particular aims at the production of neutral mesons off the neutron (bound in the deuteron), which so far is almost completely unknown territory. Here, we are complementary to the large experimental program under way at the CLAS detector at Thomas Jefferson Lab, Newport News in the United States. The use of large solid-angle electromagnetic calorimeters allows us to study reactions with only photons and neutrons in the final state which are out of reach for experiments relying on the tracking of charged particles in magnetic fields. In parallel to these experimental activities our group is involved in the technical developments of the PANDA detector, which will be the main working horse for the investigation of the strong interaction via proton - antiproton collisions at the planned FAIR facility at GSI in the next decade. We have developed key components for the electromagnetic calorimeter. Currently, in collaboration with groups from Bochum, Giessen, Frankfurt (D), Groningen (NL), and Orsay (F) we are constructing a 192-channel prototype of the electromagnetic forward calorimeter.

Abstract

The experiments of our group during 2011/2012 will mainly usethe real photon facilities at MAMI in Mainz and ELSA in Bonn forphoton induced meson production reactions. The main physics motivationis the investigation of the nucleon excitation spectrum and meson - nucleon,meson - nucleus interactions. Both topics are closely related to thefundamental properties of the strong interaction in the non-perturbativerange.At both facilities, we have contributed in the framework of internationalcollaborations during the last 10 years to set up and run world class experiments combining modern large solid angle detectors with unpolarized, circularly, and linearly polarized tagged photon beams and different types of unpolarized, longitudinally and transversely polarized cryo-targets giving access to a wide range of different reactions and observables. On the technical side, during 2011/2012 we aim at further upgrades of the Crystal Barrel in Bonn and the Crystal Ball in Mainz, which will enhance their trigger capabilities. Our physics program has developed a strong component involving meson production reactions off light nuclei. The motivation is twofold: experimental results for meson photoproduction off the neutron are still scarce but very important in view of the iso-spin degree of freedom and- as in the case of eta-photoproduction - full of unexpected results.Furthermore, light nuclei are an important testing ground for meson - nucleon interactions, in particular in view of meson - nucleus quasi-bound states. Based on our previous results on photoproduction reactions off the quasi-free neutron, in particular the still not understood nature of the narrow structure in the excitation function of eta photoprodcution off the neutron , we have proposed to the PAC in 2009 a series of experiments measuring single (Sigma, T, P) and double (G, H, E, F) polarization observables. All proposals (involving 3000 h beam time at ELSA and 1400 h beam time at MAMI) were recommended with highest priority. First data taking with the polarized deuterium target is planned for Bonn during 2010 (PhD thesis Th. Challand, Master thesis A. Kaeser), followed by a break in 2011 which will be used to upgrade the trigger capability of the experiment. The polarized target in Mainz has just been installed. It will first run as proton target, first deuteron runs will follow probably fall 2010 or Spring 2011 (PhD theses of M. Dieterle, M. Oberle, L. Witthauer).As a follow-up experiment of the search for eta-mesic 3He, which has provided excellent results (PhD thesis F. Pheron), we have proposed a new experiment exploiting coherent photoproduction of pi0-eta-pairs off 4He, which was also recommended by the PAC.For the PANDA-project at FAIR, we have continued to develop and test hardware, in particular electronics for the electromagnetic calorimeter.Most components for a 192-channel prototype of the forward end cap have been delivered or are ordered. Assembly of this prototype will start later in 2010. First test measurements should be possible during 2011. In parallel, we continue to develop the HV-system of the full end cap part of the calorimeter.
