This project deals with a question at the boundary between metaphysics and the philosophy of mind. Not with those old favourites the plausibility of dualism or physicalism but with the question whether mental episodes and states have a nature or essence. Essentialism about a class of objects is the view that the most fundamental properties of such objects flow from the nature of these objects. Essential truths about a class of objects are, it is argued, distinct from the nomically necessary truths about such objects. The project deals with the plausibility of essentialism about mental episodes and states with special reference to the emotions.
