Lay summary
Observations of supernova explosions/remnants can give clues to the understanding of stellar evolution and its explosive endpoints. Their imprint can also be measured via the "chemical" evolution of galaxies. (Surface) element abundances in stars do not alter due to central burning, reflecting the gas composition at birth. Measuring the abundance evolution of stars as a function of stellar "metallicity" (enrichment of heavy elements, measured via the Fe/H ratio) gives a histogram of the gas composition in the Galaxy. This provides clues to the ejected abundances throughout galactic history. They, in turn, reflect the physical conditions in the explosion and are therefore a testing tool for fundamental questions related to theoretical explosion models, but they depend also on unsolved issues with regard to the properties of unstable nuclei and their reactions, which enter the predictions of astrophysical nucleosynthesis.The project aims at a close collaboration of observational astronomers (determining abundances of heavy nuclei in stars, from iron peak elements up to trans-uranium nuclei) and nuclear and theoretical astrophysisists, in order to obtain a deeper understanding of the origin of heavy elements in nature, including the formation of the heaviest elements via rapid neutron capture (r-process) and the possible formation of superheavy elements (SHE).

Abstract

Observations of supernova explosions/remnants can give clues to the understanding of stellar evolution and its explosive endpoints. Their imprint can also be measured via the “chemical” evolution of galaxies. (Surface) element abundances in stars do not alter due to central burning, reflecting the gas composition at birth. Measuring the abundance evolution of stars as a function of stellar “metallicity” (enrichment of heavy elements, measured via the Fe/H ratio) gives a histogram of the gas composition in the Galaxy. This provides clues to the ejected abundances throughout galactic history. They, in turn, reflect the physical conditions in the explosion and are therefore a testing tool for fundamental questions related to theoretical explosion models, but they depend also on unsolved issues with regard to the properties of unstable nuclei and their reactions, which enter the predictions of astrophysical nucleosynthesis.
