The project aims towards understanding fundamental questions and investigating basic phenomena in the areas of thin film materials, catalysis, microfabrication, MEMS-packaging, and MEMS-system design which might finally pave the way towards a micro-Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) system. Up to know it is not clear whether the vision of battery replacement by Micro-SOFC for small portable electronic devices is feasible at all. The reason is that many fundamental aspects of such a system, i.e. ionic and electronic conduction in and transverse thin film membranes (100-200 nm thin), micro-gas processing by nano-catalyst materials, thermal management and MEMS-system design, are not understood by now. In the frame of this project, new results with respect to the electrical conduction of amorphous and crystalline metal oxide thin films, microfabrication of metal oxide thin films and nanocrystalline materials, interface analyses of nanocrstalline materials, modeling and simulations of complex microstructures and catalysis, mechanical and thermal behavior of microfabricated multi-layer functional films, packaging of high temperature devices by Si-technology as well as low temperature co-fired metal oxide (LTCC) technology, and complex system design in harsh environments (temperature, oxidizing and reducing gases) are expected. Metal oxide thin film techniques, processing and properties will be merged with those of the semiconducting world in order to find new frontiers at the border of disciplines. The research topics are in the framework of the ultimate vision to investigate whether a micro-SOFC system could be a solution as battery replacement for portable electronic devices in the future.
