This project forms the petrologic, geochemical and rheological research module of the 4-D Adamello ProDoc dedicated to the investigation of physical mechanisms that span the range from 'ductile' intrusive features such as synmagmatic deformation and intraplutonic 'ductile' contacts, to the 'brittle' emplacement of dikes. The studies focus on detailed phase petrology and geochemistry of deep and intermediate level arc plutonic rocks via a field and experimental approach, to characterize the major phases controlling the chemical evolution of calc-alkaline magmas, and to obtain reliable differentiation models as a function of pressure-temperature-fO2 and fH2O. The projects systematically investigate and derive physical parameters derived from field and experimental studies on plutonic rocks. Experimentally derived fractionation paths are used to unravel the principal similarities and differences among plutonic rocks with particular emphasis on selected rock suites from Adamello.The first PhD project (A) utilizes petrologic information to constrain thermodynamic and kinetic parameters (composition/activities, pressure, temperature, fH2O, fO2, crystal content and time (velocity of movement, cooling period, residence time in magma reservoirs)) intimately combined with structural geology to decipher the deformation mechanisms, yield strengths, differential stress and/or strains and viscosity of partially molten systems. The second project (B) is a complementary experimental study conducted in the pressure range of 1-7 kbar that will provide first-order constraints on crystallization processes of calc-alkaline magmas via (a) fractional crystallization at constant pressure and (b) fractional crystallization during decompression at near-isothermal conditions. This study will enable us to identify key parameters to track igneous fractionation of mafic to intermediate magmas under pressure conditions corresponding to mid to shallow crustal levels. Additionally, the experiments will provide crucial data required to determine saturation surfaces of accessory minerals (zircon, titanite, allanite). The development of compositional criteria and their relationships to natural compositions will be utilized to understand pluton assembly and fractionation processes of calc-alkaline magmas at convergent plate margins.Apart from much needed petrologic constraints on the shallow crystallization history of calc-alkaline magmas, this project provides first order petrologic, thermal and mechanical constraints that serve as a input and boundary conditions for improved thermo-mechanical models of batholith emplacement in general and the Adamello batholith in particular.
