Lay Summary (English)

Lead
Lay summary
The objective of this study is to characterize changes of gene expression which may be instrumental in the onset and progression of tumors of the human large intestine, with emphasis on those associated with a defect of the DNA mismatch repair system. Although advanced tumors with this defect are rather frequent (almost 15% of all colorectal cancers), it is problematic to single out their precursor lesions. Nevertheless, we have collected a sufficient number of pre-cancerous tumors of different types (both prospectively and from archives of pathology) the transcriptome of which is being thoroughly investigated. Relevant molecular changes are pinpointed and characterized. These changes may represent important tumor biomarkers that should help improve diagnosis, prognosis and treatment of these tumors.
