Projekttitel: New Developments in Ion Beam PhysicsHauptgesuchsteller: Dr. Hans-Arno SynalLead: Viele Forschungsdisziplinen, die sich auf höchst empfindliche Spurenanalytik angewiesen sind, nutzen die herausragenden Möglichkeiten von Ionenstrahlmethoden. In diesem Projekt werden die physikalischen Grundlagen untersucht, die eine Weiterentwicklung der Ionenstrahlmethodik ermöglichen und nutzt dabei Synergien der kernphysikalischen Analytik, der Beschleunigermassenspektrometrie und der Materialwissenschaften.Hintergrund: Am ETH Labor für Ionenstrahlphysik seit Anfang der achtziger Jahre Ionenstrahlmethoden entwickelt und angewendet. Schwerpunkt der Forschung ist die Beschleunigermassenspektrometrie, die es erlaubt langlebige Radionuklide wie 10Be, 14C, 26Al, 36Cl, 41Ca, 129I, Pu und Pa in extrem geringen Konzentrationen quantitativ nachzuweisen. Ausserdem werden Ionenstrahlmethoden zu Analyse und zur Modifikation von Materialien eingesetzt und weiterentwickelt. Die zur Verfügung stehenden Methoden werden intensiv in verschiedenen Forschungsgebieten angewendet. Systematische Forschung im Bereich der Ionenstrahlphysik hat in den vergangenen Jahren ernorme methodische Fortschritte ermöglicht. So können heute höchstpräzise 14C Messungen auf Instrumenten durchgeführt werden, die vergleichbare Dimensionen wie konventionelle Massenspektrometer haben. Nur die fundierte Kenntnis der Grundprinzipien und deren physikalische Limiten erlauben es, diese Methoden bis an die physikalischen Begrenzungen zu treiben. Mit den verbesserten Methoden können, bisher nicht verfügbare Anwendungen erschlossen werden, so z.B. im Bereich der biomedizinischen Forschung, wo durch die Nutzbarmachung der Beschleunigermassenspektrometrie die Entwicklung von neuen pharmakologischen Wirkstoffen substanziell beschleunigt werden kann.Das Ziel: Ziel dieses Projektes ist die Optimierung der Beschleunigermassenspekrtometrie im Hinblick auf die Verbesserung der erreichbaren Genauigkeit von Datierungsmessungen. Weiter werden die Möglichkeiten erforscht, 10Be und 26Al ohne die Zugabe von Trägermaterialien in natürlichen Proben nachzuweisen. Die daraus resultierenden neuen Anwendungsmöglichkeiten werden verfolgt. Im Bereich der materialwissenschaftlichen Forschung wird eine neuartige Mikrosonde entwickelt, die aufgrund ihrer kompakten und kostengünstigen Bauart ein ganz neues Forschungsfeld eröffnen wird.Bedeutung: Das Projekt wird dazu beitragen neuartigen analytische Möglichkeiten in ein attraktives Forschungsumfeld zu integrieren. Insbesondere die zu erwartenden Fortschritte werden im Bereich der AMS Datierungsmessungen neue Massstäbe setzen. Das methodische Anwendungsspektrum wird erweitert sowie die Nutzung und Verbreitung kernphysikalischer Messmethoden und -techniken wird gefördert.
