Lay summary
Contact with bacteria as a child can protect you from allergic diseases! A long-recognised concept in allergy research (the Hygiene hypothesis) is now also being discussed in relation to auto-immune diseases. The increase in the prevalence of allergies in the last century has been mirrored by a rise in auto-immune diseases - both trends in a century in which developed countries significantly raised their hygiene standards. These developments are the reason for a recent conference of experts, from both the allergy and the auto-immune research fields, who met to discuss the latest research findings and possible prevention strategies.
