Lay summary
The goal of this project is to build a new, state-of-the-art machine that will allow us to obtain structural information on biological molecules in the gas phase. As their structure is related to their function, the results of this project should ultimately provide insight into the latter.

From a more applied point of view, the techniques developed here should find applications in the analysis of biological molecules, since information on a molecule's mass, which is traditionally provided by classical mass spectrometry, can be complemented by information on secondary structure via laser spectroscopy.

Another important result of these experiments will be to provide rigorous tests of calculations of biological molecules -- something that is essential for improving our ability to predict their structure computationally. This has direct implications in the pharmaceutical industry.

Our method combines the techniques of mass spectrometry, namely electrospray ionization, quadrupole mass analysis and ion traps, together with laser spectroscopy of various types. Ultimately, we will obtain infrared spectra of biologically related molecules that carry information on their secondary structure.
