Lay summary
The goal of the MIPTel project is to develop and support mobile telephony applications over IP networks. Currently, we are focusing on exploitation of evolving wireless mesh networks as robust and redundant infrastructure for IP telephony. The main drawback of wireless mesh networks is the unpredictable variation of the route quality caused by the unreliable and erroneous wireless medium. Link breaks or node failures may result in high delays in the transmission, which is not desirable for real-time application such as IP telephony. We are investigating path diversity and multi-stream coding to cope with these limitations. We combine multi-path routing, multi-stream coding, and mapping algorithms to a new architecture for "Adaptive Transport Over Multipaths" (ATOM). We are evaluating various multi-path routing protocols and routing metrics. Further, we have established a test bed for wireless mesh networks at our institute. In order to support fast reconfigurations and software updates a management architecture has been developed. It guarantees the network availability even in situations with configuration errors and faulty software updates. Therefore, time-consuming on-site repairs of wireless mesh nodes can be avoided. Moreover, we are implementing multi-path routing protocols and are setting up a prototype for multi-channel communication based on Linux.
