Lay summary
A major part of the deformation of the Earth’s crust and mantle is concentrated in high-strain zones, so called shear zones. Generally, such shear zones occur in polymineralic rocks that are built up of different mineral phases. Based on natural examples, we will study the micro- and meso-scale deformation behavior focusing particularly on interplay of the deformation processes between the different phases. The results will gain new insights into the deformation of polymineralic rocks, the evolution of the microstructures and resulting physical properties (e.g. rock strength), which in turn will provide new information about the dynamics of strain localization in large-scale shear zones occurring within the Earth’s crust and mantle.
