1. Summary

Single crystalline and polycrystalline open pore materials made of purely organic building blocks providing parallel channels for the sorption/inclusion of functional guest molecules represent a fascinating new research area in solid state supramolecular chemistry and physics.

At present there is just a handful of approved examples of purely organic empty pore materials providing a VdW channel diameter in the range of about
5 to 12 Å. We have presented the first example of a 12 Å, completely guest free channel structure, persisting up to about 60° C (Mesopor. Macropor.Mater. 78 (2005), 23-27, see included paper).

By the present proposal we will start on the ground of our most recent results obtained for a fluorinated derivative (discovered in our group, December 2005) of our first example featuring 12 Å. For this new case we have already achieved (i) a higher thermal stability (up to about 110° C) and (ii) a broader acceptance range for guest molecules including iodine.

Because of a great potential to obtain a variety of properties by this new material, in a first phase (one year) we will explore phenomena of inclusion and sorption properties. In a second phase (second and thirdyear) we will concentrate on detailed studies of most promising findings.Given the preliminary results, we expect to find (i) sorption of I2(g) and other molecules at low pressure and above room temperature, (ii) formation of well isolated magnetic spin chains formed by deca-methylmetallocenes,(iii) polar properties by inclusion of dipolar C6o - derivatives, (iv) properties useful for quantum computing by inclusion of paramagnetic fullerenes, (v) 1D electrical conduction by inclusion of iodine, and other interesting properties.

It is expected that also the new example will lead to practical application as a previous zeolite (a phosphazene with channel diameter of5 Ǻ) investigated under NFP 47 II.
