Methods of combinatorial chemistry are increasingly being used for the discovery and optimization of new catalysts. In the field of homogeneous catalysis, the focus has been on mononuclear complexes. We will investigate the potential of bimetallic catalysts using libraries of mixed, halogeno-bridged complexes in combination with fast screening assays. The catalysts library will contain complexes in which two different transition metal fragments are connected by either two or three halogeno-bridges. For the synthesis of these complexes, we will rely on reactions, which were recently reported by our group and which provide easy excess to this class of compounds. Furthermore, we will develop new synthetic routes to expand the structural diversity that is accessible.
Two types of catalytic reactions will be investigated: atom transfer radical additions and atom transfer radical polymerizations. Both types of radical reactions play an important role in organic synthesis and material science. Mixed, halogeno-bridged complexes are very well suited catalysts for such reactions as evidenced by first results from our group.
Further research along these lines will provide access to a new class of highly active catalysts, which will be of interest for various applications.
