Lay summary
The topic of this project is at the intersection between biblical and philosophical hermeneutics. Its purpose is to reevaluate the goals, possibilities and limits of the historical-critical interpretation of biblical texts by means of Paul Ricoeur's hermeneutics. Is there a meaning given objectively in the text? Or is the meaning constructed by the interpretation itself? How objective are the results of a critical approach? Is there a hermeneutical challenge in the plurality of exegetical methods in the biblical studies? Does it allow a more dynamic approach of the plurality of meanings in the texts?
Ricoeur's hermeneutical theory underlines the poetical function of texts and their communicational strength, creating a "poétique de l'existence" in their readers'life, through metaphoric and narrative language. How do these hermeneutical perspectives influence today exegesis? How can they promote the dialogue between biblical exegesis and literary criticism and linguistics?
The project is based on a cooperation between the "Institut für Hermeneutik und Religionsphilosophie" of University of Zurich and the "Fonds Ricoeur" at the "Faculté libre de théologie protestante" in Paris.
