Lay summary
This project aims at studying the impact of eLearning in Primary SchoolTeacher Training in Brazil, assessing its possible applications andadvantages, as well as success conditions and shortcomings.
It will add a piece to the international research on the very crucialissue of teacher training in developing countries which face shortages ofteachers and large numbers of underqualified teachers, exploringpossibilities and drawbacks of eLearning applications.
The research will involve three main areas:
1.The issue of access to ICTs: which involves technical, economic,sociological and psychological factors influencing persons’ opportunitiesto use the technologies
2.The issue of quality: how is it possible to implement an effective andefficient eLearning program for primary teachers in disadvantagedBrazilian areas (State of Bahia)?
3.The issue of impact: the readiness of Brazilian primary teachers to useeLearning in their training, and their adoption patterns

The project will last 36 months and will be structured in two main phases:
1.Phase A aims at understanding different models of teachers trainingprograms involving ICTs in Brazil and their quality; in order to seek andsuggest innovative eLearning models, which can allow effective andefficient learning practices. Brazilian and Swiss researchers will developa grid of quality cri-teria and will ask to Brazilian institutionsinvolved in eLearning for teacher training to fill in questionnaires andparticipate in interviews, in order to build a wide Brazilian picture,with special attention paid to experiences being conducted indisadvantaged areas
2.Phase B focuses on a particular case study: CEAP -Centro de Estudos eAssessoria Pedagogica- eLearning courses for primary school teachertraining, working in so called community schools, schools wanted andsustained by small rural communities, in the Bahia area. This phase wantsto understand how primary school teachers in a disadvantaged Brazilianarea react to their first eLearn-ing experience, along three differentdimensions:
•The impact on their way of teaching and learning;
•The impact on other fields of their life (snowball effect);
•The impact on the transmission of the potentialities of ICTs to theircommunity.
The Brazilian and Swiss team will design questionnaires and interviewsalong these main topics: (1) expo-sure to ICTs; (2) perception ofeLearning according to the five characteristics of innovations defined byRogers (1995); (3) perception of the computer and the Internet accordingto the same characteristics; (4) learning behaviors; (5) teachingbehaviors; (6) their role as change agents. Teachers will be questioned atthe beginning of their eLearning experience, at the end of the CEAPcurriculum, which lasts 3 semesters, and after 6 months since theaccomplishment of the CEAP curriculum.
