During the former SNSF project 200020-101638 we have demonstrated the feasibility of thermally driven adaptive mirrors based on both, thermal expansion and thermal dispersion. Both mechanisms have proven to work and have shown spatial resolutions in the mm range and temporal resolution in the range of seconds. The results are extremely encouraging and generate curiosity to find out more about the limits. In this project the thermal pattern will not be generated with a fixed mask, but by imaging a picture generated in a standard PC program such as CorelDraw or PowerPoint onto the active layer of the mirror with the aid of a beamer. First the optimisation of the adaptive mirror in view of spatial and temporal resolution will be investigated. This especially includes the search for optimal materials and optimal cell construction for both, mirrors based on thermal expansion and mirrors based on thermal dispersion. The properties of the two approaches will be characterized and the system with the best performance will be used in the second part of the project. Then, the chosen system will be used to simulate optical elements in order to study the system resolution more profoundly and to find fields for possible applications. The spatial aspect is tested with the simulation of static elements, the temporal aspect with dynamic elements.
