Information processing in the brain involves many different regions. For a unitary representation of information, the activity of these regions has to be coordinated. This is thought to be achieved through synchronization in time. To measure neuronal synchronization high temporal sampling is needed which is provided by EEG. However the spatial resolution of EEG is rather limited, impairing precise localization of regions responsible for the measured signal. In contrast, fMRI has a high spatial resolution but is not able to access the temporal dynamics of neuronal firing. By combining these two methods, we hope to develop a feasible path to overcome the deficiencies of EEG and fMRI in spatial- and temporal resolution respectively, and to provide a matrix of connectivity between brain regions for different elemental cognitive demands.
