Lay summary
The goal of this project is to develop an individual-based computer model (a computer program) for the evolution of quantitative traits (such as size, weight, flowering date, resistance to a given condition...) in realistic landscapes. What is meant by realistic landscape? Natural populations inhabit landscapes that tend to be heterogeneous, subdivided, variable in time and space. Grasping this complexity in mathematical models is not possible, and only computer models using random events (stochasticity) can mimic such scenarios. Similarly, the genetic underpinning of quantitative traits that can be handled by mathematical models remains very basic. The computer model will incorporate the explicit genetic architecture of the trait(s) under selection (how many loci, how crucial they are for the trait(s), where they are located on the chromosomes). This should allow to better understand the respective roles of interactions among genes in determining the evolutionary potential of a species and how it could respond to environmental changes. It will also lead to the development of an open source library of statistical functions useful for population and quantitative genetics analyses.
