Lay summary
Despite of the importance occupied by the Swiss financial market place during the 20th century, there is still a significant lack of historical coverage regarding the history of the financial and banking institutions during this period. No one denies the fact that the banking institutions definitely influence the Swiss contemporary economy and society and carry a preponderant part in the international community. However, to date, we do not dispose of any work detailing, on a long term basis, the main stages of development over the century.
This application purports to fill this gap. It treats the history of the Swiss financial place from 1890 to 1970 analyzing the structural and conjunctural factors that lead to the development of the Swiss financial place. It aims not only to be a descriptive but also a comprehensive history of the evolution of the Swiss financial institutions.
The research will be structured around four large principal phases i.e. 1895-1914 ( emergence and constitution of the modern Swiss financial place); 1914-1931 (internationalization and expansion of national activities);1931- 1945 (crisis, restructuration and strengthening) 1945-1970 (internationalization and expansion).
From a methodological stand point, our project integrates a comparability dimension with foreign countries and overlaps a qualitative course focused on a range of five transversal themes with a quantitative course. This also implies the establishment of new historical statistics of the various items of the published balance sheets and financial results for this period. At the same time, we will elaborate a comparative list that will include various European countries and we will offer a reflexive critic of the history of the Swiss banking statistics.
